I'm working on my first mini for a display piece. and want to put it on a nice big scenic base. I see a lot of models are but onto large blocks of wood.
this is what I'm looking to do. However I do not have a clue where to such pieces of wood.
Does any know if a decent online source?
or what type of shops might I go to?
Internet would be easier because my home town does not have any shops that would sell this i think.
cheers.

If we're talking large-scale dioramas and army displays, B&Q floats to mind. They have a traders/builders section with all sorts of construction materials, so I reckon they'd have what you're after. They'll even cut it to size, as far as I'm aware.
On the other hand, if it's a single miniature display plinth you're after, I know Voodooworx stock them, in a range of shapes, sizes, and styles.

Good luck,

cool, cheers for the link. It is single miniatures that I want to display so these might work.

Any local craft store is going to carry unstained wooden bases. I have bought quite a few over the years. May be different in the UK but I doubt it.

Craft stores carry unfinished wood plaques with routered edges that would work for larger displays (though they would likely work better smoothed and painted - the wood has been crap, in my experience). If you want high quality, check trophy makers to see if you can pick up just the base to use as a plinth.
If memory serves, the blocks of decoratively grained hardwood that the pros use are referred to as "sockets," though I don't know if that's the official term, or just an artifact of translation - the source that brought that to mind was, I believe, German.
