I'm wondering what the difference in status between Inquisitors and Inquisitor Lords is, and whether there are different levels/ranks of Inquisitor Lords. I'd also like to know how common the latter are.

As a discussion grows in length, the probability of a comparison to Matt Ward or Gray Knights approaches one.

The Inquisition ( BL 2007 ) page 47:

Authority in the Inquisition is governed by two factors - - reputation and influence.
There is no formal organizational structure, nor system of ranks. Contacts and experience tend to hold sway in arguments with other members,
as wisdom and weight of opinion count for much.
However, there is an upper stratum within the Inquisition and it is this higher echelon, inhabited by the Inquisitor Lords ( also referred to as Lord Inquisitors or High Inquisitors ) that ensues integrity within the order maintained. An Inquisitor can only become a Lord, and thus ascend to the higher tier of influence, by means of invitation. They must be first nominated by an existing Lord Inquisitor, and this nomination must be supported by two others. Once this formality has been observed they will be subsequently elevated in status.
Inquisitor Lords have no domain, nor are they responsible for a specific part of the galaxy, rather this appointment is a reinforcement of that Inquisitors authority and power within the order.

Seems there are just Inquisitor and inquisitor lord.

There's also "interrogator", a rank just before Inquisitor which usually indicates that the person is potentially being groomed to become an Inquisitor.

Inquisitor Lord holds a ton of power. And are extremely rare.
Inquisitors are more common but still considered rare.
Interrogators serve as interrogators, invesitagating and interrogating heretics, and xenos. Then they are promoted to Inquisitors

Interrogators are also used as an Inquisitor's right hand person, as well, extending theirs by including the Interrogator's own personal influence, as the Inquisitor speaks through the Interrogator if the latter is trusted enough.

Aren't Inquisitor Lords simply influential senior Inquisitors...I never thought it was an official rank

That depends on which you read.

The Inquisition is nothing if not inconsistent.

You also have Acolytes (the first rank of becoming an Inquisitor), Notary and Explicator (no idea what those does, but I think Notary is just a fancy name for secretary. For the Explicator, well he is probably the guy that comes to explain things if the Interrogator has a speech-impediment).

If you have nothing nice to say then say frakking nothing.

I don't think they are Inquisitors...
They are a part of his retinue...
interrogator has been specifically mentioned as an Inquistor in training...

I know that purplefood. Also my guessing was off, the Explicator is the first rank of becoming an Acolyte of an Inquisitor. I still have no idea of what a Notary does, as going from torturing people to taking notes seem to be a bit of a relegation.
