Hello and welcome.
I need to keep up with my painting, getting fed up having so many ideas and never getting round to actually making them happen.
So here, in this blog which you'll see has long periods between updates, but hopefully will become much more regular is where I will keep a log of my work.
At the moment i'm working on my Chaos Space Marine army, with a mostly Nurgle theme, but I am moving away from that slightly. I'm not going to do too much work on it before the new codex, and Tyranids will be the main focus of my attention. I also hope to build a diorama, and possibly a board for playing on at home. There will probably be some LOTR work on here as well from time to time.
Any advice on anything would be very welcome.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
Right so first update (This will probably attach itself to the first post won't it?)
Going to put everything in spoilers for now, just because i've got quite a few images, and their all WIP.
The above two images, my first (well second, first posted image is the first rhino I did) rhino, from either side. Obviously need to add hatches. Not 100% on what to do with the bunch of skulls paint wise, also think they look a little out of place, might add a few more skulls around that bunch. Need to paint a few details, such as the Icon, the lights and the metal bits.
The second rhino, with a close up of the skulls on the side. Didn't turn out quite how I hoped. Planning on improving that later, or trying it again on another tank (was originally an idea I had for a Khorne tank, but with less green stuff).
First image has come out very badly, using my phone camera, which is supposed to be good, but doesn't have macro setting. They are brown Plagues, drybrushed with rotting flesh, and also have the pipes tin blitz like the green plagues, not very easy to see though, even in person. Done black eyes on both colour plague marines, not sure if thats the best option though... I think the green ones are going to look fairly decent when they are done.
This should be a link to my gallery , there is some more photos in there, mainly from when I tried a blog last year. So what do you think of my Rhinos so far, how can I improve them and my Plagues?
Thanks

So in a not so great start to this, i'm not going to be able to post any updates until Sunday/Monday.
Reading week at Uni, thought I had stuff to do during the days, but don't so have gone home, and haven't brought any 40k to paint.
I did make some progess yesturday, mainly painting details on the rhinos...
Lots of work to do when I get back to Canterbury, will hopefully get it all done in time.

Thought I had already said Thanks, but just looked and I hadn't!! Thanks
Nurgle is definatly fun, I could probably be a bit more imaginative, but will probably have to leave that until new codex, as got a couple of other projects I want to get started soon.

Update time!!!
Changed the name, from one unimaginative thing to another, i'm rubbish with naming anything (Both my Hamsters, and now my Guinea Pigs are just named after Buffy characters )
Looking for some advice now, first i'll explain what i've been doing.
Went home for a few days, so didn't get any painting done, came back to University, did some more detailing on the rhinos (not that you'd notice, not sure why i'm spending so long on them, most of the work i've done on them won't ever be noticed), started to base coat a Berzerker, with Merchite red and it took me 20+ mins, to paint just the red armour parts, now i'm not sure if thats normal, or if i'm just slow. But thats one coat, that either needs touching up, or having a lighter red painted over it, started doing some of the bronze (using Dwarf bronze) to see if the Red was ok that dark, and I do kinda like it, but thats taken even longer, because my eye sight seems to be extremely poor (i'm supposedly short sighted, so should be ok painting up close, but not especially, think I need another eye test). Also the lighting isn't great, and where I sit at my desk, I cast a shadow over the area i'm painting in, so have to lean back to paint....Have also decided to borrow my step-dads Daemons for the tournament i'm going to next Sunday, so I don't need to rush painting now!
But a revelation, i'm actually enjoying the painting Its great, put some music on and paint for at least 30 mins, before I would often get the stuff out ready, then just put it away. So even if i'm only painting in short bursts, its better than nothing, and it is becoming enjoyable.
But today, I started painting a Razorback in Space Wolf colours, not 100% sure why, kinda thinking I might start Space Wolves up again because I like the Thunderwolves, but won't be happening anytime soon. But this is where I need some help.
A shot, with no flash, think it shows the colour up best.
Two shots with the flash on.
So, I think this razorback had been painted previously (by me) in Ultramarines colour, and then just sprayed black, which was pretty stupid (unless I sold the Ultramarines Razorback, and bought a new one, which is possible). Today I used Astronomica grey (twice) not watered down, which gave quite a thick but smooth basecoat, and then painted watered down Space Wolves grey twice. I want it to be pale blue like that, but I have a few issues, one the paintjob is terrible, not too many brush strokes, but there are some (don't know why I didn't just use my spray gun....) and its quite thick. Did I need two base coats of the foundation paint, even thought the first one was a bit 'patchy' (well lots of brush strokes). Also, should I wash or drybrush it? Or just highlight it? And how should I highlight it? Space wolves grey mixed with white?
This is a 'test' model, so i'll probably strip it in the future and do it all over again, but want to try and get a finished product soonish.
Also, sorry for the huge walls of text. Any advice, or comments on the Space Wolf Razorback, or the Nurgle Rhinos would be very welcome and appreciated.
And I was mean't to bring my Mum's camera back with me, i'm just using my phone, which despite being 8MP doesn't have a macro setting, and isn't all that great really, i'll try and remember it next time i'm back. Because at the moment I can't get decent close ups.
Thanks

Oh look, a new blog! I really like the first rhino!
As for the Space wolve one; Id suggest you to highlight it, because washes and drybrushs look terrible on flat surfaces. Washes pool, because there are no recesses, and Dryruhing will only make it look dirty.....

Right, another WIP shot, not far off being finished. I'm full of questions, started a thread on Painting and Modelling section, but have had no answers to any of my questions yet, I have a couple more, but they can wait. Click here to see the other thread
First (in spoiler tag) had flash on, and used the auto-adjust when uploading to Dakka, gets a sharper image, but the colours look different to how the do in person...
And a more accurate portrayal of the colouring:
Not sure wether to try and do any weathering, I kinda want to, but I don't want to ruin the (not very good) paint job i've done so far, last time I tried weathering I didn't do it very well and went over the top. Another idea I had, was slushy snow on the tracks and bottom of the tank, but not sure if it will look any good, or how to do it....
Also, i'm going to try and sort out a light box in the next couple of days, might help my images quality a bit.

Good stuff here, I always enjoy a good nurgle blog.
That Space Wolf rhino looks pretty good, but you could certainly make it better with some more time. Especially the hatches and the triangles in the front. I would suggest that you use something like a ruler to get the lines a bit straighter, and at least map it out with a pencil before painting.
Otherwise, good work and I want to see more of what you have.

I'm not as good and steady a painter as I thought I was (to be honest, haven't painted very much anyway, despite playing/collecting 40k over 3 years (and LOTR for years before that). I was going to ask wether using pencil would work, but didn't and just tried to paint them freehand, and didn't turn out that well. Also must admit, this is mean't to be a Razorback for Long Fangs, i'm using the wrong colours I got Wolf Guard and Long Fangs mixed up.
And with the hatches (I presume you mean the Yellow and Black hatches) I wasn't sure what/how to do them at all, its all a learning curve at the moment, I will spend some more time on it, maybe not for a while as I should be painting Chaos really...
Will hopefully have my 10 Plagues 'finished' tomorrow (not based, left my basing stuff at home home, and also they don't have backpacks, not sure if that really matters, I don't particularly care if they have them or not, but other people might think its wrong) and all three of my rhinos are almost fully completed. Then i'll start on a Vindicator and Predator, as well as attempting to carry on with my Berzerkers, but they take too long.

Ok so i've been pretty lazy painting wise this weekend....
I built a Razorback, have treebeard soaking in some brown dettol, so I can strip and re-paint (going to give to my Mum as a Birthday present, its not until 11th April, but I think I probably need this much time to make sure it gets done...) and sprayed a few things with primer.
I have, now, got a list of things I want to get done before I go back home for easter in just under 4 weeks (but since i'm home this coming weekend, pretty much only got 3 weeks to do it all in):
Paint Treebeard
Paint 8 Berzerkers
Finish 10 Plague Marines
At least basecoat 5 Chosen
Paint Abaddon
Convert/Nuglify and paint Land Raider
Possibly convert my Terminators into Obliterators
Paint/get a large amount done on 2 Vindicators and a Predator.
I'm hoping thats doable, I have one (I hope one, and not two) essay due in as well, and also doing practical work, so my time will be pretty filled up, but if I cut out the doing nothing in particular for too long on the internet, only watch a couple of Buffy eps a day and just get on with what I need (or want) to do, should all be fine.

Right, its quite funny to read all the things I was planning on doing, and just didn't do...
But i'm starting up again, and with my last and only exam on Tuesday, i have four and a half months until I start back up at Uni again (although hopefully I will manage to get a job to fill some of that time).
I'm moving onto a new project, Dark Eldar. I will still be trying to get some Chaos done, as well as some other stuff ( LOTR, and I still really want to do a diorama). When I go home next Saturday, I will get some photos of the Treebeard I painted for my Mum. I think it looks ok, its nothing special though.
I do have a target, and one I have to meet with my current DE. For 1st July, (a local tournament) I need Vect (old Archon), Lady Malys (Using a Lhamaaen), 38 Wyches, 4 Raiders, 10 Hellions and 3 Ravagers. I might change the hellions to beasts, but I don't have any Beasts so i'm not sure. The Raiders and Ravagers are old models, I like them and they were so much cheaper on ebay.
I do have a WIP pic, i've actually spent far longer on this than you may think from the photo. Basically I did a Naggaroth Night basecoat, followed by a heavy druchii violet wash (shade), and then two (maybe three, thin) coats of Xereus purple. I like the colour, I think i'll give it a wash, to give it a bit of depth. Highlight in a lighter purple. Paint the metal bits and see what It looks like then. (hopefully will get most of that done today). If you have any advice on this what so ever, it would be really helpful. This is essentially my test model:
Thanks for looking, and I promise regular updates this time.

I've got three rhinos all mostly done now. Still need to do a bit more detail work (and also sort the front hatch things out). I see a lot of very creative Nurgle stuff on here, some great painting and conversions. Always seems to be better than mine, but I have to admit, the more I look at mine, the more I like them. Fairly simple, to be honest i'm still very much a beginner when it comes to painting.
Done a wash on my Raider, think I might have to do another. I'm not expecting a wonderful job on my DE, just presentable and done to be honest. Automatically Appended Next Post: A small, and perhaps not entirely necessary update, but I made some progress and any feedback I get could really help.
Here, after a wash (Druchii again) and started to highlight, just done that area so far. And apart from it being a little messy I quite like it. Not sure if its too thick or not.

Feel a bit cheeky updating without any pics, but I will have some later.
I've not been doing too much painting as of late, only have a couple of free evenings a week at the moment, but have now cleared my desk so I have room to paint during the day (kind of). Will have some WIP shots of a Predator and Vindicator and the start of some Zerkers.
Will be starting on my Nids soon, got to build some first, some already built bought from ebay. Got to work out if i'm going to be magnetising or pinning any of the new models though.
Not sure if i'll get a response here, its not urgent. But if anyone knows of any good Hive Fleet Kraken paint guides that would be useful.

So here comes the proper update!!!
Firstly my to do list for this week:
Build: Swarmlord, 2x Tervigon, 3x Hive Guard, 24 Gants (21 Devourers to add to my 9), 2x Broodlord. Add my Paulson games Boneswords to 3 Warriors.
Prime above, plus as much of my already built Nids. Start to base-coat with Iyaden Darksun I think (will have to see what GW have replaced it with as well...)
Finish my Zerkers, Plague Marines and two WIP vehicles (plus any bits on my previously shown Rhinos).
I hope thats not too much to get done, if I just get too it, shouldn't be too bad. Need the Nids built (and preferably primed) for Thursday evening. I am planning on making a to do list every Sunday evening for the following week, hopefully it will give me a few things to do, and I can stick to it.
Anyway, onto some pics.
First, i'll put these in Spoiler brackets because its two pics (different quality and flash on/off) of the same model) my first Bezerker, not finished. Hopefully you'll notice on at least one of the pics, that one the left leg, and helmet i've given the red a wash of good old Devlin Mud.
I'm not sure what colour/s to do the Chain Axe yet, so if anyone has any ideas that'd be great.
Onto my Plagues. I'm thinking these are pretty much done, bar the guns that I need to paint.
And now the WIP Vindicator and Predator, with the 'nurgley' bits, I decided just to wash straight onto the white primed green stuff, before that was painted brown as well (I think...), not sure if I like it or not, so might go back over and do it how I did previously. (There is also another angle shot of the Pred in my Gallery)
Like i've said before, i'd love any advice anyone has. On my 'converting' (well, putting green stuff and sand, and a couple of holes/scratches on tanks), painting or anything else, that would be much appreciated.
I do have one question that I would quite like answering, I may post it in the main P&M section if I don't get any response here, i'd like to know if anyone has any ideas on how to do battle damage on my tanks, or how to make it look more 'rotten'. I previously saw a technique using one or two of the washes, dripping down from the divets, but it didn't work on my colour unfortunately, anything like that, I think could make the tanks look even better.

Glad to see you back in the fray! Nice nurgle stuff again, I like the tone of the green marine.
To make the Vindicator even more nurgly, I'd but more mud on it (fine sand and plenty of PVA glue) and paint/greenstuff pus and other liquids oozing from the crevices. Also, try some sponge weathering (rip a small chunk off a sponge and use it to apply boltgun to the corners and edges of the thing. It'll give the impresssion of metal showing through. Highlight the most prominent of these scratches witha lighter metal color)

Cheers MrMerlin, I'll check your blog later on, haven't checked in for a while.
Do you mean mix the sand and PVA together then apply? Or just lay on sand on like I've done previously?
I like your advice though, so will try and apply it too my models this week. Thanks.

So a update, only a few days late this time, not weeks/months like last time
Been building a few Nid models, and painting my Zerkers, they aren't really in any better position to show though.
But I do have some pics of Treebeard that I painted for my Mum (for her Birthday, back in April). Its probably the only thing I have completely finished painting and basing, so for that reason i'm also going to post it in the Showcase forum.
I didn't finish Merry and Pippin (in fact don't even think I started them) in time for my Mum's Birthday, so didn't put them on and she was happy with it just like that. I'm fairly pleased with how it turned out, was pretty easy to paint. I'm sure its nothing special, but its a finished model, and I would like to think it isn't too bad.
Now I hope to have a update of the Berzerker variety tomorrow. Maybe fully painted!!
