Sitting on the roof of my house with a shotgun, and a six pack of beers

Hi All

I've been thinking about starting a historical wargame for a while, I thought about Napoleonics as my father used play them and still has a lot of his mini's. I also thought about starting flames of war as a guy at my club plays, so would hopefuly be able to get an opponent on a regular basis.

However on reflection the period that interests me most is WW1. I'd like to start a 28mm army and would like some advise from any seasoned campaigners.

Rules, I looking for something reasonably easy to pick up as my spare time/playing is limited and would like to be able to dive in.
I was thinking about buying warhammer historicals - "The Great War" has any one used them? are they any good? are there better rules? if so what are they?

Mini's, like I said i'm looking for 28mm and i'd prefer to avoid metal, renegade seem to do some nice mini's. Does anyone have any opinions on them? is their a better supplier?

Thanks
Spank

RuleswiseI would suggest WHH The Great War and Over The Top. Fairly east to get into. Designed for 28s also. If you have andy 40k experience it is easy to learn because it is basically 4th ed with some tweaks. With the addition of OTT this year the game feels very fleshed out.

I have not done a lot with 28s, I have been working it with 15s. Easier to paint and cheaper to get started.

I wanted 28mm because it's what i'm used to, I thought 15mm would be too small. My painting is not brilliant.

thanks for the help, I was thinking about getting great war to start with.

I'm not sure there are any plastic figures for the period - unless Hat do some.

Renegade figures are very nice. Other ranges to look at are Brigade Games, Great War Miniatures, Copplestone, Wargames Foundry (though the range is not on their website anymore), Scarab, Gripping Beast.

As for rules I'd suggest Through the Mud and the Blood by Too Fat Lardies.

I'd also suggest that you consider doing something along the lines of Back of Beyond or Very British Cvivil War, in addition to playing straight WWI gaming, is it will allow you more variety and possibly make it easier to find people to play against. They may not want to play what is perceived as a dull and futile game on the Western Front - which is a false perception of the period - but they might fancy playing Latvian National Anarchists or a Chinese Warlord or whatever.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the post, I was thinking about getting early war mini's as the early war seems to a lot more fluid. I will google the books you mentioned and give them a look.
