Didn't see it on Dakka already, so check it out:

looks quite promising, and I for one welcome our new Dark Mariner overlords, the miniatures hobby needs more tentacled and slishy things!

Hmm, nobody has really done undersea war before. Looks like a decent game.

Looks like I'll be looking it a new game. This looks interesting. I'm a huge fan of undersea games!

I really hope that some form of verticality and/or swimming will be a factor in this game and that the underwater theme isn't just a gimmick.

True. Time will tell.

I can honestly say that I can't imagine verticality being an important element, it's fine for aircraft games but I am not so sure what scale we are talking about with this game.

Aircraft games have the whole turning-radius and forward-movement factors.

In all honesty, this game could really set itself apart if it could pull off height in a graceful manner. Otherwise, there's not much distinguishing it from the other skirmish games out there aside from the models.
Heroclix did it somewhat clumsily with some models having flight. DeepWars could do it quite easily simply because it's underwater.

Models are great and all, and will likely be the primary selling factor. However if you're going to make a ruleset, you may as well make one that stands out.

That's rad terrain. I'd buy one and drop it into my fish tank. Give The Beast (my giant plicostomus) something to lord over. For that matter that spear fisherman soldier would look good in the tank too, but I don't want my fish getting accidentally speared in the face.

THE FUN HAS BEEN DOUBLED!!!

At 250USD, I doubt that terrain should go in a fish tank ...

I have thrown down 100USD on this kickstart effort. The two models shown thus far are at least as good as anything released by PP and a PP-quality starter set with a hardcover rulebook is worth at least $100.

I hope this one gets off the ground.

That harpooner is better then many of GW's sculpts tbh...

I agree. And as I don't know of any other underwater-themed miniature lines (save this same company's earlier efforts), I'd say it's a pretty good deal. Just looking at those two masters, i could easily see myself purchasing both starter sets.

A hard cover book and starter set of 4 miniatures will cost you $100 and people doesn't seem to care about the price. Now, I feel sorry about all the bad comments I heard for Dreadfleet.

Where do you saw that the starter was 4 miniatures?

Edit: Oh, Nevermind, just saw it

Looks good but I'll have to agree that the prices for the kickstarter are a little weird.

I might wait til I hear more about the company before I make a decision to donate.

I think this looks really cool... I wish I had some cash to spare. They need a wrecked submarine type terrain piece.

I wonder if with a $500 pledge I could convince them to put in a flame thrower.

Pledging $100 - I want those Deep Mariners. I reckon I could use a whole army of them as proxy Nurgle Marines with a Bioshock bent to them. They look fantastic.

Doesn't look like it to me. I've never seen a space marine or Eldar swim, or use harpoon guns.

PP starter pack (approx. four miniatures) + Hardcover WM Prime Mk II Rulebook = 95USD MSRP

I realize the comparison is not exact but it's close enough given that PP is a 12 y.o. company and this is a Kickstarter project. Plus, when I bought that WM stuff, nobody put my name in the credits.

This is a kickstarter, you're not purchasing a product from the company, you are investing in them with the intent that the money you give them be used to fund the project which they would otherwise not be able to do. In exchange, the company is giving you some of what it is going to be producing, etc. as a reward for helping them get off their feet.

So, if you're going to complain that "100 dollars doesn't get me enough stuff" then you can sod off.

For the record: I am in no way affiliated with this company, I just really like the concept.

This is a really good post but you’ve essentially pointed out one of the core reasons why I think the prices are weird. As a kickstarter project, the prices are already within parity of PP/GW (their terrain set was priced at $169). Makes me wonder what their prices will be like when they establish themselves.

The other reason why I reckon the prices are weird is that the donations tiers are a little unbalanced compared to other Kickstarters I’ve seen. $25 gets you a single mini (not so cheap) and yet $35 gets you a starter set of 4 (cheap), $100 gets you a starter set and a hardcover rulebook (not so cheap) and yet one can purchase the starter set and hardcover book individually and get both for $80 (weird).

It’s also hard to make a decision without knowing more information about how their rules work. The PP starter boxes work really well as warmachine tiers really well in low points games (with 15-25pt pickup games being a common thing). Hypothetically, if their skirmish ruleset needed 10-20 models to play standard points games, with metal minis being sold individually at $25 a pop (based off the first donation tier), I could see Deepwars being an expensive game to play.

That being said, I’m still highly interested in donating towards the company. I’m hoping in the next 20 days (before the kickstarter ends), they release more information that can better convince me to donate.

One obvious issue about this project is the lack of information about what the end product will look like. I have to email them to know how many miniatures you get in the starter set. They relied, "There are going to be four miniatures in the starter set. Three are in the 28-32mm range and one is a larger figure, around 40-50mm in height. " Still, there is no information on whether the three smaller minis are the same or different. In addition, you cannot find anymore concept arts other than the three posted, one for each race.
One reason why people support kickstarter projects is the perks they get. If you have no idea what it means or how important it is. Check out Gunship: First Strike. It reached over 200% of its goal within a day and all limited pledges were gone. The designers receives more money at the end. It is a win-win situation which I fail to see in this project.
This game is obviously a low number skirmish miniature game. A better comparison is to match it with Hell Dorado. A starter set costs $30 and a softcover rulebook is $40 without taking any online discount into consideration. So, the kickstarter price give you no deal at all.
Finally, the goal is surprisingly low at $3,500. Even an ordinary card game costs more than that to start off.
Unless you really like your name to go into the credit, make two donations separately with one for the rules and the other for the starter set. A smarter way is to wait until they put the products on the market. With online discount, you probably get a better deal. If unfortunately they can't make it, then it will be bad for them and good for your wallet.
I hope my opinion will change with more information available.

Well there are some more Dark Mariner concepts (actually completed minis) out there, if you have a look around for them (they were made for the Shadowsea range and are supposedly usable across games, etc.

Well said.

I agree that the Kickstarter prices don't give the user a deal (they seem to be ordinary retail pricing to me). It seems to me that the company is using kickstarter as a pre-order/promotional mechanic rather than as a Kickstarter project.

Personally I think they need to restructure their donation tiers otherwise waiting until the product hits the market rather than pre-ordering through kickstarter might be a better idea.
