Staying on target.....

Looking at using a sauron necromancer army and I have been looking at maybe using a castellan or two. I love the models but I am unsure as to their effectiveness on the battlefield. They are as hard as nails with their stock of will and the ability to use it as fate but they seem horrendously fragile at the same time.

Any advise or is this a case of 'leave well alone, they're '??

Cheers

Think of them like budget Ringwraiths.

They are solid fighters and with Morgul Blades they are good at assassinating characters that have run out of Might and Fate points.

Yeah, they are Fragile so the key to using them is to team them up with other models so they can be assured of winning their combats and then getting their Blades in.

Even though they have 1 wound, remember that they can use will points for fate, so they can take a beating but they can also die from one lucky hit

The same can be said for Ringwraiths.

I sniped one once with a Dwarf archer Was quite a surprise for both sides(I was actually just trying to kill his horse)

I really want to run a Necromancer list at some point...I think they would be more effective in the WotR book...

I just realized that doesn't answer your question...I might run 1 or 2 in LotR, but probably no more than that, because it can cause you to sink too many points into Heroes. Now that you need warbands, and the castellans can't lead a band, and the Necromancer is a pretty penny himself, taking a bunch of Castellans and the Necromancer could mean you only have 15-20 guys on the table at 500-700 points. yikes. We're Mordor; there's supposed to be GOBS of us.

Castellans are quite good with the option of a Morgul blade (can get two instant killing attacks) however, like Nazgul they really completely on will and can be killed in a single strike but at only 40pts they make excellent fighters but cannot lead war bands. Maybe take one or two with the Necromancer and some really cheap Orc Warbands or Spiders.

The biggest indicator someone is a loser is them complaining about 3d printers or piracy.

Castellans are awesome (I have 4 of them). The work really well against enemy infantry cause they can take so many hits while cutting a bloody swathe through them. Watch out for calvary though, cause getting run over by 3 riders of rohan means 12 s3 attacks
