Hi all, I'm just starting to paint again after about 15 years, and I'm planning on painting a custom space marine chapter.

My idea is basically Dark Angels, but red instead of green. The idea is it will be a fair bit darker than the Blood Angels. I expect that Blood Angel Red will be the brightest highlight.

The issue I have is all the paints have changed since the last time I did this, and I'm somewhat stumped.

Can anyone recommend a good colour mix for a very dark red? It's for a base coat initially, but if I can use it as a foundation for mixing highlights that would be a bonus.

I only have a limited selection of paints at the moment, and the mixes I've tried all tend to come out brown.

There's a major overhaul rumoured for the GW paint range.
I'd probably suggest Vallejo instead.
Try VMC Burnt Cadmium Red as a basecoat. It's lovely.
