Hello dakka just a quick question.

I am painting black on my Cadian guardsmen and noticed it appears flat and takes away from the detail. My question is how do you paint black

without it appearing flat and boring?

Thanks for the help.

You need to use dark greys. It's like white; you want it close but not exact.

Paint the area with a 7:3 Chaos Black:Codex Grey ratio. Wash with thinned down scorched brown. Then highlight by adding a little more codex grey into each successive highlight. Gives it a bit more definition and colour.

I painted the black on this model by doing chaos black then drybrushing adeptus battle grey followed by codex gray.

I personally paint my black in the following way:

Black.
Glaze a 50:50 mix of black and vallejo german grey ( very dark grey)
Glaze a final highlight of pure german grey.
Glaze back down in your shadows with black if required
