During my RPG called On Warped Tides, my players discovered a talking knife. The knife told them two separate stories and it was up to them to choose who to believe.
Here are the stories and who would you choose?
My name is Tidum Fall-lore, 50 years ago my ship “The Canoness” came into contact with a powerful daemon while traversing the warp. Slowly it ate the souls of my crew, until it became to powerful to contain. Luckily though, we learned that while the daemon could eat souls it could not take lives. So using myself as bait, we tricked the daemon into eating my soul while killing myself at the same time. As a result, we trapped the daemon, along with my soul, inside the knife. I’ve waited years for someone brave enough to free from that prison I used to call a ship. Please! You must destroy this daemon inside here once and for all! If you can take us to Caldais, you could use the shrine there to banish us once and for all. But beware strangers, I hold within this form, great power. Power that could help you! If you desperately need something to tip the scales of fortune, I will do whatever I can to provide it.
Don’t listen to that… THING! My name is Hiero Golgosso, 50 years ago my ship “The Cold Remark” discovered a knife while trading. Unfortunately for us, the knife contained within it a daemon which has stalked my family line ever since my ancestor banished it when it first appeared in our reality. It slaughtered hundreds of my men, until we captured within a holy prison. We tortured for years, until the knife called to us no longer. Like a damned fool! I grabbed the knife, only to have the daemon reawaken and kill me, trapping my soul within its horrendous form. With my crew overtaken by the daemon’s foul corruption, they carried my ship into the warp, where the daemons brethren feasted on them for years. You must destroy this daemon inside here once and for all! If you can take us to Renbara, you could destroy this knife with the holy forge there and banish this daemon for good. But beware strangers, I hold within this form, great power. Power that could help you! If you desperately need something to tip the scales of fortune, I will do whatever I can to provide it.
For those wondering what On Warped TIdes is... its a fusion of Dark Heresy, BFG, and Rogue Trader in which the players play pirates.

Throw that thing into a sun, I have a bad track record with items that talk.

I agree with sun it.
But I can't really see one story as being better (morally, more likely to be truth etc) than the other tbh.

Chop his hand off and throw that into the sun.
Bionic replacement shouldn't be too hard to get and could be a minor quest.

I would cut my characters hand off to get rid of the thing. If I had to pick one of the things I wouldn't believe anything that it told me. Ever. I would look for some forbidden lore or something that would help me get a better grip on the situation with this thing. (pun intended)

Bad news guys.... they chose to use the knife...
So it gave them two ghostly hands in space by which they used to destroy a pursuing fleet of dark eldar chasing them.
The captain now sometimes thinks he is a child...
