Reading thru the rules of the space marines, i notice that the chaplain has "combat tactics" which allows him to auto fail any morale save, but he also has "Honor Of The Chapter" which makes him fearless which means he auto passes any morale save?
which of these takes presidence? is the chaplain/any unit he joins able to both pass and fail any morale checks at will?

If the Chaplain joins a non-fearless squad, he loses Fearless.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

no no the rule for "Honor Of The Chapter" states that the fearless rule is extended to any group the chaplain joins.

the question is, he's both "Fearless" due to his "honor of the chapter" rule
and has "combat Tactics" as a special rule aswell.. normally the rule for "combat tactics" states "non-fearless units"
but as the chaplain is not "fearless" but rather has a special rule the imbues fearless, i was wondering how this worked?

Combat Tactics is there possibly to swap out with other chapter masters... isn't it?

That's more likely. I did not know that any unit he joins gains fearless.

Yes, it's so taht he can gain the benefits of other chapter masters. IIRC, it's even in the FAQ.

but it's not a chapter master though? D:

yeah the rule states :
"Honor of the chapter: A chaplain utterly embodies the honor of the chapter. he, and all members of a squad he has joined are fearless, as described in the warhammer 40,000 rulebook"

so he's not "fearless" himself, but rather has a special rule that imbues fearless to him and his squad

Right. But to gain Fleet from Shrike, you have to trade in Combat Tactics. For example.

No, but the different Chapter Masters have Chapter Tactics rules that affect models with Combat Tactics.

Q. When you select some special characters (Shrike,
Vulkan, etc.) all units in the army exchange the rule
‘Combat Tactics’ for another one (like Stubborn) thanks
to the rule ‘Chapter Tactics’. However, the special
characters themselves follow the rule ‘Combat Tactics’.
Is this intentional? As I understand it, the rule Combat
Tactics is in fact the ‘Chapter trait’ of the Ultramarines
and other ‘Codex’ chapters... (p51)
A. Ah, the Combat Tactics rule is just there for when
you use two different special characters and have to
choose which of their Chapter Tactics rules apply. So,
say for example that you include both Shrike and
Lysander in your army. You decide that Lysander is in
charge, so all of the units with Combat Tactics
(including Shrike) replace Combat Tactics’with
Stubborn. So, these special characters never really have
the Combat Tactics rule, as they either exchange for
their own Chapter Tactics or the Chapter Tactics of
another such special character. In term of the story, if
they are subordinate to another commander, these
great heroes are flexible enough to adapt to the
fighting style of their battle-brother.

Nothing.

He has Combat Tactics so they can be swapped for Fleet etc. If he didnt have Combat Tactics he could not gain these rules.
