There's a lot of 5th ed fluff hating and a lot of 5th ed fluff defenders. So, I'd like to see which edition people thought was the best. Feel free to engage in heated edition wars.

I would prefer a mix of 3rd and 5th really. Some of the new stuff bothers me with concern to my very favorites, the Necrons, but other bits I like. The same, however, holds true for a few other things. I like bits of old chaos, bits of new. Bits of old orks, bits of new. Really that manner for all the races

I think the fluff only gets deeper and more polished the longer the franchise goes.

I love every aspect of the fluff, except the stupidly overpowered characters and some slowed battles ( Bloodtide ).

The Emperor doesn't have a GKs unshakable faith in the Emperor which is....basically himself?

It's hard to say.

Are we refering to Codex fluff or the fluff as whole?

3rd edition was IMHO the most fluid and encompassing of the fluff.

However... If you read the BL publications from that time period some of the fluff is a little strange.

The fluff from 5th ed is alright.

They did well with the Dark Eldar. The Necrons, I think the change was needed, but it could have been done a little better.

Grey Knights were completely ruined for me. I loved the older feel to them. Now they're just another marine army that aparently fights on behalf of the entire Inquisition, instead of the mysterious daemon hunters they once were.

I think every edition has had decent fluff. I think though as we have progressed and with the introduction of the Heresy Heresy Black Library books certain thinks aren't as awesome and mysterious anymore. Also as things get newer, things tend to get a bit over the top and seem to fit in less and less. They have to move with the times but certain things should not be meddled with.

Rather than further muddy the waters with new aspects of established fluff, old stuff could be cleared up. I suppose I contradict myself a bit there. Basically some things should be possibly left alone but if they want to explore certain things they should do so without confusing matters more.

Coa mentions the Bloodtide, now this could be two separate things or it could be the same thing, consistency would be nice.

First one was awesome ( Hunt for Voldorius one ), second one was pure horror....

This is my point, at least give enough information to either connect or dissociate the two, not just leave it ambiguous.

Going purely by a fluff perspective, I'd have to say 2E Codices. There was an insane degree of detail in those books, up to actual hard numbers for stuff like "what kind of protection does power armour really offer?" or "how many SoB Seraphim are trained every year?" or "how many Storm Troopers are there in the Imperial Guard?" Not to mention the intricate descriptions of history and organization stuff. How things work!

In terms of rulebooks, however, I think 3E was better. Then again, 3rd edition had the worse codices. More shiny photos, less story. The Guard one in particular was like 60% pictures, 30% Cadians, 10% other.

I enjoy all editions as far as lore goes, but fifth edition is the best in terms of rules.
