Hey guys I am reading through Titanicus, and ya know.... I just can't figure out, are the Chaos Titans living entities or are they crewed? Because really they always seem to act like giant mechanical demons, not a semi-living Titan with a crew.... Any help or idea?

Maybe the crew are fused with the Titan?

As much as I love Warhammer 40000 and all of it's awesomeness and grim darkness - I must here say Clone Commandos would won the day.

That's possible, but the reason I ask is I don't know a lot about Chaos. So really I am trying to figure it out. Like Titans are crewed by servitors. tech priests, and the Princeps who orders them around (there are other crew too but I won't name them all) so things take a tad longer to process. Meanwhile the "archenemy" titans act like beasts and repeat their corrupted names and laugh in machine code. Just trying to figure out if they are truly like possessed machines with no crew, though it's totally possible the crew is fused

From Lexicanum:
"The crews and Princeps of Chaos Titans have long become physically merged with their machine, their bodies and souls sacrificed to the Gods of Chaos in battle. Many have since become possessed by Daemons, further corrupting the once proud Titan warmachines. They are driven on to ever greater depths of destruction, motivated by their hatred of the Mechanicum."
The source apparently being an IA book.

I can imagine this being true of Titan Legions like the Legio Mortis that have been corrupted for a very long time.
The Adamant (stand and deliver ) Fury Legion mentioned in the 5th Ed rulebook would be a relatively new addition and could still have mortal crew.

Well that would make sense seeing as these boys were Dark Mechanicus, they've had a LOOOOOONG time to get fused!

Yeah, as with most things Chaos, I'm sure a traitor Titan will often start out nearly identical in form and function to its Imperial counterpart. With time comes corruption, copious amounts of spikes, and a tasty Daemon filling.

From the Lexicanum:
The Dark Mechanicum was a sect of Tech-priest of the Adeptus Mechanicus who pledged loyalty to Warmaster Horus at the end of the Great Crusade.
Horus gained the loyalty of the group after promising them STC technology gained from the worlds of the Auretian Technocracy. They supported him during the start of the Horus Heresy and were present on Istvaan V where they used dark and forbidden knowledge against the Imperial Loyalist forces. 1
In the 41st Millennia, the Dark Mechanicum are still active, utilizing massive daemonically corrupted Titan war machines of the Traitor Titan Legions against the Imperium and producing infernal weapons and Daemon Engines from the world of Xana II.4

It's Chaos, mateys. Anything can happen in a thousand years or in the blink of an eye. So, you can live for eternity as an independent, bilaterally symmetric and reasonably sane being, or have your squishy bits melded with iron and plasteel and your mind filled with screaming warp-things. Depends on the whims of your daemonic masters.

Well I kinda thought they were either one being or perhaps fused since I really couldn't see a Chaos titan crewed like an Imperium one.... I mean I don't think they would even be capable of of organized calm piloting and operating

I'll roll with the 'fused into the titan' theory.
Even Forgeworld roll with that. These images are from the Chaos Warhound:

Well in theory that would be the best idea. Seeing as even the princeps and crew of Imperium titans are pretty much connected with their machine in a spiritual and physical sense. So mix in the idea of that same thing but add in chaos gods and bam you have guys fused forever!

I think they start out as just traitors, like traitor guard, but eventually Chaos Titans probably become a sort of malign entity on their own, either wholly Daemonic or a creepy blending of the crew's minds and a lesser demon(s). At least enough that it makes up for the crews being insane.
Most of the books dealing with Chaos Titans make a good play at the "scrapcode' having some sort of consciousness, almost like an insane AI.

Yes exactly, the scrap code is what made me wonder if they were just like possessed titans. But the fusion totally makes sense now. My only other question is why is it the their symbol would make people retch? In Titanicus when people see their chaos mark they vomit or get sick... A little confused on that one since they can look at the flesh banners and effigies and not feel to bad.
