Curious about people's thoughts. Assuming the vamp lord is tooled out for magic (else you can't fairly compare a melee vamp to a casting necro), which is the better buy between a vamp lord and a master necromancer. Also for sake of arguement we'll say <=2250 points as over that you usually have points to burn.

Quick thoughts by me; vamp lord will have more survivability and some melee ability even without magical melee goodies but costs 200 points more (assuming a lvl 4 vamp lord w. 100 and 100, against a lvl 4 master necro with 100 mag items). For that 200 points, that's a decent rare or special option which will bulk up the army (which is roughly comparable; use a Varghulf, the # of attacks and survivability are close to the same.)

I'd go with the Master Necromancy just becuae the only game I've seen the new vamps in the level 4 vamp attracts too much attention, now if you have a level 4 necro and say a unit of hexwraiths then (for roughtly the same points, you don't need to give the allotted 100 points for your necromancer) then that looks better and although hexwraiths have no D at all, they can be horrific against a lot of armies if used right

Level 4 Necro Lord is cheaper of course, which does mean more bodies, however Vamp Lords get access to Vampiric Powers which means they have the ability to get +1 wound or re-roll one of the die for winds of magic, maybe proxy for a few games and see which you prefer?

A lvl 4 Vamp Lord costs about 335 pts with no powers and no wargear.

IIRC a necro lord costs about 135 pts less.

That is an entire 20 skeleton block with full command.

6th edition lands on June 23rd!

Good news. This is the best time in the hobby. Full of promise. GW lets us down each time and we know it but secretly we're hoping that this is the edition that GW gives us a balanced game that can also be played competitively at tournaments. I'm loving it.

And the sad bit about that is the vamp lord has more combat potential than those 20 Skellies

For pure casting, Necro all the time. It's cheap, and that's the entire point. You can play one even at 1000

At 2000, I prefer to have a hybrid or combat Vamp though, backed by lvl 2 necros. The inability to spam IoN from a single source makes the multiple casters much more important, IMO.
