Imperial Recruit in Training

Not sure if im doing this right please let me know if not.

I love the 40k novels especially gaunts ghosts, Cain and the horus heresy series.
My girlfriend has recently encouraged me to start collecting some of the figures and painting up a small army
I'm relatively new to this so if anyone has advice please share so far I really like the look of the imperial guard but wouldn't know which regiment to start with any suggestions.

Thanks.

If you're not sure what to start with I'd say pick up a few models you like the look of and go from there. If you like the Gaunt's ghost books why not pick up this.

Not everyone, builds complete armies btw. If you just like the look of a few models choose them and see where that leads you instead.
