This question came up in a previous post, put up by someone else. Instead of hijacking that post for this question, I post my own.

On page 67, there is a note that talks about what a firing unit can do in regards to a unit they forced to disembark (by destroying their transport.) It reads:

Note: remember that all models in a single unit fire
simultaneously, so a squad cannot take out a transport
with its lascannon and then mow down the occupants
with their bolters. However, if a transport is destroyed
(either result) by a ranged attack, the unit that shot it
may assault the now disembarked passengers, if it is
allowed to assault according to the assault rules.

So it would seem that some interpret this as to say ONLY the firing unit can assault the now tranportless unit. I would say that if there is a secondary unit within range, they too could assault them, whether they fired at the transport or not. Am I wrong?

You are incorrect and correct at the same time:

Any unit that fired at the now disembarked passengers, or that did not fire at anything could assault the now disembarked passengers.

Out of all the units that shot at the transport, only the unit that destroyed the transport are allowed to assault the now disembarked passengers. This provision allows the unit that destroyed the transport (And only that unit out of the units that shot at the transport) to assault something other than what they shot at.

if a transport is destroyed (either result) by a ranged attack, the unit that shot it (meaning shot and destroyed it) may assault the now disembarked passengers.

Is this the only exception to the "Shoot one thing, assault another" rule?

I didn't realize you could destroy the transport and then assault it that same turn, so bear with me as I'm just making sure I'm clear on this. Essentially, if a 10 man IG Vet squad with shotguns and meltas blew a rhino, they could then charge whatever came out correct?

Alright sounds simple enough to me

Ok, so if a unit didn't shoot at the transport, it too is free to assault the passengers when they're ejected. That makes sense.

No, any unit can assault the occupants of the destroyed transport, but I dont have any page reference-sorry.

Tournament record: (W/D/L)
Space wolves : 1/1/1
Dark Eldar : 6/0/1 (1 overall win)
Daemons :8/0/2 (1 overall win)
Normal games starting 5/11/12:
Dark Eldar 13/0/1
Daemons 32/1/1
Friends armies 1/0/0

Did you shoot the transport? If no, charge away.
If yes, did you blow it up? If yes, charge away.
If no, the only unit you're allowed to charge is the transport.
Once another unit blows it up, where is your charge target now?

Wrong. Any unit that shot at the vehicle and did not destroy it cannot assault the now disembarked unit. This is because you can only assault the unit you shot at. P67 allows an exception for THE unit that destroyed the vehicle through shooting to assault the unit that disembarked, but no other unit that shot it.

Yes, that is the only exception to the "Shoot one thing, assault another" rule.

Normally you can not "Shoot one thing, assault another", this exception lets you shot the transport and if you destroy it, you may then assault the now disembarked passengers.

I must say that if you are;

1. Going against the general flow of the opinions of the thread

or

2. Making a statement that is generally seen as wrong

- You really ought to be able to post a rules quote (or failing that, just present an argument).
If you cannot do so, you simply shouldn't post at all.
