What creatures are kept as pets in the imperium?
I've read of several references to Cats (refered to as just felines), but are there dogs, birds, fish, or even some alien critters?

I would think the higher ups in command would be allowed to have some sort of Pets, but are there any that have Pets with them even on the field of battle? (the only one im aware of it a duel headed eagle on some grey knight guy, may be wrong)
any other references in fluff? Or for the most part can be made up for personal faction fluff?

In the Ultramarine's book "Courage and Honor" the IG commander had two alien guard dog like creatures which were also his pets (he had leashes for them and everything). So they do exist but not as much as I would think. i don't know why the IG don't have some sort of attack dog corps. They would probably be pretty good to tracking genestealers and orks still in spore form.

Do thunderwolves and the other wolve variants count for some of the sw marines?

I'd say no. Thunderwolves and the regular Fenrisian Wolves are pack mates to the Space Wolf they've bonded with, not pets. Closest equivalent they could be considered is a brother to the Space Wolf in question.

That's a gyrinx, basically a familiar. They've popped up again in the ia corsair list. Hardly imperial, though.

Squigs are a pet in the 40K universe as well as snotlings. Not to mention Nurglings for chaos.

There are, but I think that they are a symbol of power first and foremost, rather than a companion.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Besides, Emprah's children aren't in the Imperium anymore. Something about a heresy...

All sorts of people keep pets, though depending on where one finds one's self in life, it may not be a great idea. Several IG regiments are said to have mascots, whether these are dogs or felids or huge-ass bears or whatever. I can only imagine that feeding such a beast on a star voyage is a royal pain in the rear. Though I'm sure the unit has a budget for that.

Several Rogue Traders, and other people of wealth and means, keep all sorts of exotic xeno creatures as pets. However, since these things are decidedly non-intelligent, they tend to fall into one or another category of space-dog, space-cat, space-monkey, space-bunny, space-gerbil or whatever. What it actually looks like is unimportant, as it's just a xeno-equivalent of whatever sorts of pets we keep on earth, really.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Gyrinx originated in 1ed 40K. They were, iirc, psionic enhancers, that could make a psyker slightly more powerful.

Incidentally, there was also the ptera-squirrel, which seemed to be a cute pet, but gradually changed into a killing machine that would turn on its owners.

Schrott

Flesh and Iron had a reference to there being inhabitants on the planet who kept cats (domesticated felines), unfortunatly some of said felines had a unplesant fate due to a village the chaos forces attacked had a person who owned multiple cats.

Thats one of the few books i've read with them in it.
BUt my guess is that since Humans like bringing their pets with them everywhere, that eventually they would bring their pets into space and to other planets, so cats, dogs etc are likly common animals in the imperum. THey are probly just not referenced as they are more or less "scenery" unles said animal is attached to a pivitol character or event, such as a Dog being a companion to a particular Commander or Space Marine (can space maines keep pets?)

IM wondering if there are futher references to animal companions in the 40k Universe, be they big or small. Also player fluff allows for regiments/chapters/ etc to have characters to own animals and im curious the extent people include companions in their own fluff.

my regiment for example has a commander who has a small green cat with him at all times, the cat has a tendancy to drink the commander's alchohol ration (not that the commander drinks anyways), granting the cats name to be "Tips" short for Tipsy .
