I'm a painter not a fighter! Looking for suggestions on lists for the above. This is purely for fun games with my young son.

Are you asking which army to build? Personally I think at 500 points, Guard and Orks are going to be more fun to build and paint, as well as play at that point level. A little more diversity in what you can do with them.

Orks are a perfect army, they are surrounded by sillyness.
However a simple army might be more fun for him, try getting the AoBR set nice little 500 point 2 army set with instructions on how to run basic learner games

I'm really happy with my current 500 point IG army, so I'll post if for you to take a look at

(85) ccs- las cannon, standard
(45) pcs- auto cannon, grenade launcher
(120) infantry squad- commissar, 2 power weapons, flamer, auto cannon
(75) infantry squad- power weapon, flamer, auto cannon
(100) vet squad- 2 sniper rifles, las cannon
(75) Griffon Heavy Mortar

Gives you 40 infantry models and an artillery piece which feels very fluffy,

Just make sure the orks take advantage of 2 inch coherency, or the Griffon will pound them into the dirt.

Orks are fun and silly, take the time to read through all the codex if you can manage it, lots of Orkiness in there. And welcome to the greenside!
