Next month my FLGS is hosting a tournament with the following rules: "Bring your best 2000 point army to compete on the field of battle. Your list must contain at least 1 HQ, 2 Troops, 1 Elite, 1 Fast Attack, and 1 Heavy Support choices."
With that in mind here is my list.

HQ (125pts)
Librarian (125pts)
Null Zone, Terminator Armour, The Gate of Infinity

Elites (635pts)
Sternguard Veteran Squad (185pts)
6 Man Squad
Drop Pod (35pts)

Terminator Assault Squad (450pts)
2 LC 3 TH/SS
Land Raider Crusader

Troops
Scout Squad (115pts)
4x Camo Cloaks, Missile Launcher, 3x Sniper Rifle
Scout Sergeant (
Camo Cloak, Sniper Rifle, Teleport Homer

10 man Tactical Squad (205pts)
Flamer, Missile Launcher
Drop Pod

10 man Tactical Squad (210pts)
Meltagun, Missile Launcher
Drop Pod

Fast Attack (260pts)
Vanguard Veteran Squad (260pts)
1 Relic Blade, 4 PW 4 SS

Heavy Support (440pts)
Land Raider Redeemer (240pts)

Thunderfire Cannon (100pts)
Thunderfire Cannon (100pts)

Total 1990

The idea is to put the Vanguard in the Redeemer and move them in coordination with the terminators. The Thunderfires sit back and plug away at hordes/troops or dangerous vehicles (The underground shell). the Troops can either drop or infiltrate onto the field for objectives. The sternguard can drop in for a forward firing point/ objective denial or do the same in my deployment zone depending on the situation.

Any and all "constructive" C/C is welcome and desired.

Drop the Vanguards, replace with Attack Bikes (150pt anti tank goodness.). Drop the extra Land Raider.

The problem with Thunderfires is that, since they use the small blast template, all an enemy has to do is spread out and they'll only get a few boys. I prefer Vindicators, and some people prefer Dakka Predators (Autocannon/Lascannon Sponsons)

If your librarian is going with the Terminator Assault Squad, Give him a Storm Shield. 2+/3++ save on your Librarian makes for murderous goodness.

I personally also dislike Steel Rain tactics, with lots of drop pods. With all your extra points from dropping the Vanguards / Land Raider, you can mount combat squads in Razorbacks with Las/Plas or 2L Las (WYSIWYG would stop you from having Las/Plas if you dont custom order a non-GW thing, or make it yourself. :/), and have the Missile Launchers hanging back and firing at armour.

Is there alot of Horde armies at your FLGS?

There were about 15 to 25% of the last tournament I went to there, with the rest being SM (2 GK and 2 BA the rest nilla of all lists except Khan bikes)

I do like your Suggestions Crazyterran, however I do not have the models for it. I currently have 0 (zero) bikes of any kind, 1 Rhino and the only other armor I have is 4 Land Raiders I recently acquired from a friend for next to nothing. Which is why I was running a pod list (also acquired from friend at low cost).

I could absolutely do a SS on the Libby I just need to scrape 5 points up. (which i just realized scouts don't need the teleport homer if the Termies are mounted in a tank)

I can provide a list of all the models I have available if you guys want.

Sounds good, Maybe we'll all figure out how to throw a strong litst together to take down those darn MEQ/GKs.

I found that a good way to take down paladin spam is to roll as many shots onto one unit as possible then move to the next squad. Preferably high ap, however Sternguard or any other rapidfire bolters work just as well.. But off topic.

I have:
4 LR tanks
1 rhino
12 sternguard
30 Space marines (troops)
5 Sniper Scouts
3 drop pods
10 Vanguard Vets with jump packs
1 Jump Chaplain
1 Shrike
1 captain/master on foot
10 assault terminators
5 dakka terminators
2 thunderfires (with techmarines)
And that is all the models I have available. I might be able to pick up 1 or 2 boxes but not a whole squad of bikes.

To make use of land raiders I want to have enough tanks to make use of the shot magnet else as a distraction so the raider can get close.
This means buying 2 more rhinos.

The alternative for me would be trying to use the 3 pods, but this will need to be supplemented with shrike to help your force deploying. Librarian+assault cannon are the extra models, plus combimeltas+heavy flamers, but maybe I would try something like the following. I guess you usually infiltrate 10 assault termies with shrike, this can not guarantee first turn assault and you need a fast option anyway.

195 shrike
100 Librarian with gate

345 10 sternguard 8 combimeltas, 2 heavy flamers, drop pod
220 termies+assault cannon

100 snipers with ML and cloaks
245 fist, melta, combimelta, ML, drop pod
230 fist, flamer, ML, drop pod

260 vanguard

200 cannons

MFletch: so let me see if I have this right. For your first option you would suggest taking 3 rhinos for the Troops instead of drop pods. (personally I don't mind this idea and might actually look into it) Or are you suggesting 2 rhinos on the tacs (which tbh i have no problem picking up a rhino before said tournament if that is the case).

for the second list are you suggesting dakka termies with an assault cannon attached to the libby. and then Shrike with the Vanguard (who at that point cost have no jump packs and no transport). And absolutely no transports at all (not counting the drop pods)?

I almost forgot that i have 2 dreads
1 AoBR
1 Regular Dread (currently with tllc and ML but easily changeable)

Drop the one tactical squad on an Objective. If it's an annihilation you can drop it in your own army, or in a forward position...

Have Shrike Infiltrate with the Vanguards, and since your entire army has fleet with Shrike out, you jump them, run them, charge first turn for 40 attacks from the Veterans + 5 from Shrike. With this many strikes, you don't really need power weapons.

Have the crusader go 12 inches at the start, and, if you get close enough, drop the ramp, drop out the assault termies, run them, charge them as well. Have the Librarian with the Terminators for psychic powers/hood/lulz.

The Sternguard can ride up behind in the rhino, or you can switch the rhino to a tactical squad and drop them into the enemy army.

Your goal is to hit the opponent really hard, really early. Vanguard + Terminators + maybe Sternguard (I suggest giving them the drop pod against a tank heavy army, they can pop two tanks in one turn.) all appearing in the first turn can crumple a lot of armies lines. If it's a complete mechanized force, consider dropping a Thunderfire for meltabombs on your Vanguard.

I personally took Terminators with Thunder Hammers because they can smush tanks and any MCs that you might encounter.

I really do like the look of that list Crazy.. I just feel like I should point out a thing or two.
As I said in the OP this is a tournament so swapping out things is a no-go, I'm looking for a TAC list (or at least a take most, frustrate the hell out of the rest list). As such taking only 1 drop pod I do not really benefit from the Drop Pod Assault rule, nor do I have the repetition of multiple rhinos for the redundancy/target saturation of same av armor that seems to be so favored.

Overall I do like the way that list works, and honestly that is how I like to play my Vanguard when I have them on the table. (well with more pw but its close enough.)
Also IIRC Shrike only gets 4 attacks on the charge. (His 2 LC do not confer an attack bonus as far as I know and he is base 3 attacks)

Also for tournaments it is a house rule that your Psychic powers are whatever you choose at the beginning of the day and that is what they stay.

Two Lightning Claws are two special weapons of the same type, so they should confer the + bonus for attacks.

EDIT: Ahh, no swapping anything? Might want to stick the Sternguard in the Drop Pods. Since you always drop half of your drop pods (rounded up), having one pod means you drop one pod. And since your vanguard + shrike are infiltrating, and your terminators are coming in full speed on the Land Raider with the Terminator Librarian, you can either drop the Sternguards in the pod to be anti-tank, or drop the marines on an objective. Ten Marines are hard to remove...

Since you'll have two heavy assault units in his face, he can choose between going for them, or going for your sternguard. You are giving him a lot of dangerous things in his deployment zone turn one.

And, if you have to stick with two psychic powers, it all depends on what you feel you'll be facing most. Nullzone to take down things like TH/SS terminators, and maybe... Might of the Ancients? Can use that to mess up tanks with your TH/SS guys...

As well, if none of them fit, you could use your force weapon, if you are feeling daring. Nothing quite like insta deathing a High Wound unit!

Hmm I always assumed that it was already included in his profile and that that was why he was A3.

I edited my above post, and all captains are base 3. so, Base 3, +1 for two weapons, +1 for charge!

40 attacks... makes me want to make a list to go with my Vanguards / assault Marines, just for giggles.

Ah ok I see that now.

Also If I am mounted up there would be little need for GoI, my normal power usually paired with Null or Avenger.. It is possible that I will go with Null/Avenger the next few times I am out to see how it goes.

The only Issue I have had with Vanguard is that my opponent will usually focus fire the hell out of them and they do not survive much beyond t2 if they are out of cover/cc. thus the SS equips..

Again I like how you think and will definitely be testing out what you have suggested to see if I like the play style.

Now that I think about it.. That pod of Marines or sternguard don't HAVE to take the pod into combat.. They can be deployed normally and still have the pod come in empty in reserve.. Now this may sound weird, but I once saw a player running a Steel Rain list drop a few empty pods as deployable cover for his advance.

I am getting reeaallly excited to play test this list.

EDIT your math on the sternguard is off by about 100 pts.. so that list is currently ringing in at 2110 pts

I Changed it to the following:

Shrike - 195

Librarian - Terminator Armour + Storm Shield - 140 (Null Zone, The Avenger)

Elites:

Sternguard - 10 Sternguard, Drop Pod - 285

Terminator Assault Squad - 5 Assault Terminators, Storm Shield, Thunder Hammer - 200

Dedicated Land Raider Redeemer - 265
Extra Armor, Multi-melta

Troops:

Tactical Squad - 10 Tactical Marines, Melta, Missile Launcher, - 175

Tactical Squad - 10 Tactical Marines, Melta, Missile Launcher, Drop Pod - 210

Fast Attack

Vanguard - 10 Vanguard, Jump Packs, 325

Heavy Support

Thunderfire Cannon - 100

Thunderfire Cannon - 100

-1995 pts
