I was looking in my buddies dark angel codex and It dawned on me that ravenwing sounds out of place. Why does have this name there is no ravens in the dark angels. it sounds like a unit for raven guard and if i had my way in naming this company it would be angel wing or something.

Does anyone have any reason for the out of place name

Because they wear black armor, and their insignia is a sword with a wing. Also it sounds very cool.

In order to understand it you have to look at what they do vs modern mythology. The Raven is a symbol of impending doom and the job of the ravenwing is to hunt down the fallen angels. So from that we can gather that the name is a warning of the traitors coming death. Terrorism 101

Quote the raven "never more"

I groan every single time I remember the bit of fluff that Corax's final words were "Never more."

Yeah, I wonder which poem the writer of the DA codex was inspired by.

"Angelwing" sounds ominous as all-git-out. I've always thought the Ravenwing was a bit out of place too, Dirt. I'd much prefer "Angelwing," which brings to mind images of lawful retribution, a fiery wrath raining down from an almighty, unstoppable source. "Ravenwing" sounds like a fan club for goth kids with pasty complexions who like clove cigarettes.

That is exactly what I thought and it kind of makes sense because It is looking for fallen angels and An angelwing is pure and holy to smite the tainted.

If you play D.A, then paint your Ravenwing white and gold and call them Angelwing. They're your toy space men, who's going to argue? Nobody, that's who.

Well no one is arguing that point, it even says in the codex you can name your characters and models whatever you want, as long as you communicate with the other player what rules that model is going to be played with. Example: you can call your model Pete as long as you tell him or her it's Belial.

You also have to think how they formed up for an attack formation. They charged and formed up like a Bird/Raven. In ther spread wing formation. Hench Ravenwing.

It's worth bearing in mind that not only had the Raven Guard not been named when the "Ravenwing" name was coined, but that the name comes from a time long before every Astartes chapter was obliged to name all of its equipment after itself. Nowadays they'd be called the Robedwing, or the Darkwing, or the Closetedwing or something equally lame and obvious.

Actually giving things more varied names is much better than bloodwing, wolfwing, etc.

Originally, the Dark Angels had a strong Native American theme, which was later reduced and retconned AFAIK. But the names and feathers plus old terminator models still show this heritage.

Gathering the Informations.

They did not really have a "strong Native American theme", outside of one instance.

The only ties to that was the story "Deathwing" and the names of the members of a Terminator squad which went on to cleanse their world of a Genestealer Cult. Most notable was that one was named "Two-Heads Talking".

Kroothawk is right, however, in that it has been "retconned". The story of the Deathwing and Two-Heads Talking is now considered to be a way for the Dark Angels' Aspirants to be exposed to the tale of Luther and the Lion(the homeworld turns against them; then they have to destroy it to save it).

Huh, that's interesting. I've never fancied that style of poetry (1/2/1/2, 3/4/3/4, etc.), but it has a good mood, and is pretty appropriate.

Because pigeon spleen tested poorly with audiences.

Actually that's a fib.

Everyone knows GW doesn't do market research.

Seriously the RW showed up in Epic Space Marine back in Rogue Trader days. The DA also had the iron wing an all tank detachment.

Raven Guard didn't even really exist at the time. Plus the DA had an American Indian theme going at the time.
