Hi Everyone,

I am making a switch from 40k and getting into Fantasy and wanted to know where to invest money as well as best options for the ogre army at around a 2k army and then where to expand from there.

I am currently reading both the codex and manual and want to know where to spend points and build a list possible. I want to have an army thats heavy hitting and can get into the action fast. I was wondering how to build a calvary centered Ogre army, if at all possible? What sort of point distribution is needed? I was going to get the battalion box to help start the army and build from there.

Thanks a bunch.

You can't go all cavalry, you can get multiple units of mournfang cavalry, but no characters can get mournfangs. ironguts are ace, sabretusks are essential for war machine hunting.

What do you want to find out about point distrubution? like minimum core 25% and all?

I figure I want to spend as little points in calvary and the rest elsewhere. Could you make up a list that would show the Ogres to get into combat the fastest and hit as much as possible per turn. I would like to have as much mounted/calvary as well as magic as possible for a 2k army. I am still trying to figure it out and seeing a list and distribution would help tremendously.

The reason for a whole calvary army was because I was hoping to make them based on ironskin tribe. I found this PDF and was hoping to build somehting around it.

Ah but the book doesn't include rhinos cavalry bro,

Slaughter master
Fire belly
Bsb
15 iron guts
2x4 mourn fang cavalry
3x1 sabre tooth
That's probably around the 2k mark and pretty much what my cousin fields and does well with

what about Thundertusks or Stonehorns, What is the advantage of the hunter and a pack of Sabretooth's?

I don't see any advantages of a hunter, but the sabretooths go after war machines mainly

The Ogres have 3 tools for war machines including Sabretusks, Gorgers, Ironblasters. Gorgers are the worst option though because the Sabres and the Ironblasters are useful in other ways too and Sabres are cheaper.

Technically, you could field 3 units of 4 mournfang Cavalry as your fastest, hardest hitting troops. It is kinda though and not intended for friendly matches.

I want to make a tough list so that I can play different strategies and last as long as possible. I thought having lots of calvary would be good since the Ogres have a slowish movement rate.

Normal Ogres actually move 6" and march 12" so they are actually the fastest moving infantry in the game. They are faster than elves or rats.

Calvary is a cool aspect of warhammer but ogres aren't really strong in it. In fact they only have Mournfang calvary in special. Yhettis are not very good but if you use them use them like calvary. If you really like calvary play brettonia.

That may be true, but Mournfangs are one of the best cavalry in the game

Appreciate all the feedback so far. Does anyone have a list or could make a 2k list focusing on maxing out calvary, with stonehorn/thundertusk. I really want to see how other people construct a list that has good magic and calvary. Since I am making the switch soon I just need to know where the majorety of points needs to be allocated.

I don't think going all/mostly calv is a good idea with Ogres. You'll have so few models on the table your opponent will be able to tear them apart with war machines/magic and you'll have no way of dealing with it.

...urrrr... I dunno

It's probably worth noting that Ogre armies are pretty damn fast even without cavalry, certainly speedier than most.
It's their muscly legs, see.
That and given the limited nature of Ogre cavalry, it's actually much better to use foot troops, if only so that you don't get overrun and ripped to bits by more numerous armies.

However, Mournfangs are the bees' knees, and I'd reccomend having one solid unit of four of them in your army.

Waaagh! Gorskar = 2050pts
Iron Warriors VII Company = 1850pts
Fjälnir Ironfist's Great Company = 1800pts
Guflag's Mercenary Ogres = 2000pts

Sounds good. Now for regular troops should I do a mix of normal troops and ironguts, all ironguts or all regular troops. Of course they have BSB and the usual wargear to bolster their forces.

I prefer mixes, although some people advocate no ironguts while others field nothing but them (and sometimes Irongut Deathstars)

I think a 2-1 ratio of bull units to ironguts is good

On a sombreo, wearing a deckchair.

Just have a go yourself is my advice.

New ogres give you a lot of fun when writing lists and whilst mournfang are freaking hard. They will get magicked at; all the time.

While mournfangs are fun and good at smashing things, they often draw a lot of fire from war-machines and wizards. Things like warp-lighting cannons are really annoying when they take out half your unit.
