So, didn't see any discussion about this. I find it...curious.

For one thing, all the advance reviews I've read say the action (predictably) is great, while the acting (predictably) is atrocious.

For another, I remember reading an article about Admiral McRaven, the current head of US Special Operations Command, taking flak for all the publicity surrounding special operations recently - from Osama to the recent Somalia thing, and so on. This seems to turn that up to eleven. Is it really a good idea to be showcasing the tactics guys like SEALs use to the whole world?

Oklahoma City, Ok.

Recruitment film. That's what it's made to do.

The first time I saw it I thought it was a recruitment commercial masquerading as a movie trailer. Even though I found out later it actually is a real movie, I still think my initial assessment was right.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

The action is mostly training exercises, I think. Doesn't mean it's bad, but still. The acting is understandably bad, because these are real operators and SOF guys. Would you rather see Brad Pitt falsely represent the SOF community and act well, or have the community itself portray what they actually are, albeit with bad acting?

Everything has been carefully danced around that would compromise the intelligence of the community, although I do think the DOD has been pushing the envelope a bit lately. I've heard the film was originally intended to be a recruiting video. I've seen a couple of them in the recruiting office, and they're usually alright, although they're usually overly intense for no reason. There was one about Master-at-Arms training, and they were doing a swim test, and there was really dramatic music and that shaky camera thing they always do to build tension

I dislike when the DOD puts videos out to the masses, and people get all feverish, and they go down to the recruiter and say "I want to be a SEAL/ Green Beret/ MARSOC/etc". Just irritates me. Especially when the Navy really doesn't have that many spots in the first place.

I didn't even make it all the way through the trailer.

I almost always agree with Albatross, I can't see why anyone wouldn't.

Okay, so the male version of "Cougar" is now officially "Albatross".

Brad Pitt. If I want real I can watch a documentary or read a book. If I am going to a movie to be entertained I'd prefer it be done by people who know how to craft a movie. I'd rather the SOF community be good as Special Operations and film makers to be good at film making. Odds are this won't be any more or less real than any other action movie we've seen either. They are still doing multiple takes, having to hit marks, read dialogue, and are not actually getting to shoot anyone.

It's just more war porn.

"ACTUAL special forces guys, using ACTUAL special forces weapons and ACTUAL special forces tactics!!"

So the feth what? It doesn't look like they can act worth gak, and the plot looks like the sort of third-rate he-man nonsense that even Steven Seagal would be embarrassed by. And he's not a man who embarrasses easily. Just look at his hair.
