Basically what the title says. I remember reading somewhere that they can't but I have scoured the rulebook and cannot find it so. So can they not contest objectives or was I misinformed.

As long as they are only immobilized and not a wreck, yes they can contest objectives. As long as they are still a viable unit, they can still contest.

Back in 3rd edition, an immobile vehicle couldn't hold a quadrant. That may be what you, or the person teaching you the rules, is remembering.
In 5th ed any unit contests an objective, unless it's destroyed (and remember that Falling Back units are removed when the game ends but before victory is determined).
