Montreal, QC CAN

It's official, on the GW site...

20 warriors,
5 immortals,
5 scarab swarms,
Ghost Ark.

What do you guys think...

Personnaly, i find it to be a real bang for your buck. How many would you buy? I'm hesitating because i might end up with way too many warriors, but the arks and immortals are nice, also the five scarabs will be nice with the spyder rules.

Opinions on the matter?

Not enough points... NEVER ENOUGH!

Indeed, somewhat old news I'm afraid.

There might be some merit in people's discussing the relative merits of the force, so it's off to40K general for this thread then...

If you add a HQ to make it legal, I think it's the most competitive battleforce out there.

My Armies:
5,500pts
2,700pts
2,000pts

It's nice to see a battleforce full of units you'll actually take. It's a good value and you'll get use out of everything in there.

I thought the Imperial Guard was pretty legit.

You get a Platoon Command Squad, 2 Guardsman Squads, and a Heavy Weapons squad, and you get a free Sentinel. Sounds like a deal to me.

I guess Sentinels arnt all that great but whatever *shrugs*

Its a great buy for anyone starting necrons. Unfortunately for every other necron player it is a horrible buy. we spent the better part of 10 years where your basic warrior was the ONLY troop we could field and at one point (4th edition) fielding 80 warriors was actually a good strategy.

Every box of warriors we bought gave us the scarabs. I had so many scarabs I used them to decorate the bases of my warriors.

When 25 of 31 models in the box set are the same models you have been buying for 10 years you tend to not care. The immortals are cool (I wonder if they give you the sprues so you can make deathmarks out of them) but once again for the last 10 years they were the only elites choice worth fielding. A lot of people didn't buy them because they were expensive and slightly annoying to put together. Though the new plastics are awesome.

And this might just be me, but since I had so many warriors already, my first purchases were some ghost arks for them. I could still use another one sure, but the battleforce won't be the way to get it.

Armies that use the some model for multiple units tend to benefit a lot more from battleforces. I am so looking forward to the sisters of battle BF. Even if I have 40 battle sisters and they give me 20 more, I can put them into pretty much any slot in my codex. Where as a necron immortal is always just that.

When in doubt burn it, then burn yourself for doubting.

Yep I second that. The last thing an existing Necron player needs is more warriors.

For someone just starting up, I think its a good deal

Extra Warriors are not a bad thing. For most of veteran Necron players Warriors are just conversion material for Crypteks, Deathmarks, Lords, Immortals, etc.

I'm actually considering buying the Battleforce then getting 20 Deathmark Torsos, heads, and some Tesla Carbines off eBay. All in all, I'll probably end up spending about $60 or so.

Unless you put the 2 squads as vets and merge the HW teams into them meaning they cannot readily move without sacraficing the HW teams firing, the battlebox imo isnt very decent in terms of completeness....no doubt good value for money though.

But considering how IG is made up you need 2 of these boxes plus a real command squad to function. I cant help feel that IG got a bit jipped in the respect. Im not sure it could of been improved given the makeup of IG.....

The battleforces are based on monetary value, not to make a playable starter army. It is true that one can't buy a playable army generally, but it's an alright value for the money. Sentinels aren't great, and a lot of people don't want them at all. Personally I've had okay luck with them though, but people are sore over the loss of the Leman Russ from the battleforce. Considering how awesome the command squad kit is, I can't complain too much.

I plan on getting at least 2 in the future, possibly 3. I am a veteran necron player... who sold his army about 3 years ago >< so its still a very useful deal for me, and in any case I wanted to play a warrior heavy list, and this setup is pretty much right up my alley

Chicago. Also space. Depending on my mood.

Seeing as the Battleforce comes with spare parts to create either Deathmarks or Immortals (your choice), as well as spare parts to turn that Ghost Ark into a Rape Cannon, I'de say it's a pretty good deal. Pick up two a' these, another box of warriors, some green stuff...

More bang for your buck, and a decent starting army. Especially considering that Necrons aren't as mech-heavy as other armies, imo this is a good deal.

Regarding Tau, If I may recommend tactics to you...

^^ What this guy said ^^
2 Battleforces gets you 40 warriors, 10 scarabs, and 2 Doomsday Arks, pickup a couple boxes of lichguard/praetorians, mix and match with the 10 immortal/deathmarks and you have yourself 2 full 10 man courts (if you are ever crazy enough to play such a list O_O! ). Add in HQ and a couple boxes of other stuff and you have yourself a decent army that can play a wide variety of points levels at a semi-competitive level (competitive if you know what you're doing and shun internet easy-button builds) and even some WTF? builds that are good for a fun game or two.

Seems, alright to me, but I don't know what I'd do with more warriors.

I am kind of sad to see there are no destroyers included, even if they kind of suck now I still like their model.
