So I'm getting back into playing, last played in the early days of 4th ed. As several things have changed, some drastically, some in minor ways, I'm trying to get a handle on the rules.

My question is that the army list for scouts says 1 scout can be armed with a heavy bolter with hellfire shells. The the troops description says they CAN use hellfire rounds. So are they allowed to use regular heavy bolter rounds, or does it have to be hellfire shells?

Thanks

One shot of hellfire shell blast, or
3 shot of Heavy Bolter.

Your choice when you shoot.

Leohart is right, and it is an important distinction.

Hellfire rounds use a profile found on page 100 of your Space Marine Codex. [I believe they are Str X, Ap 5, Rapid Fire, Poisoned (2+)]

Hellfire shells are detailed under the Scouts entry earlier in the Codex, and have a totally different profile, which is still Poisoned (2+) but is a Blast weapon rather than a Rapid Fire one.

I got confused myself on that and used to think that the Heavy Bolter had the option to fire Hellfire ROUNDS rather than Hellfire SHELLS.

I think I got all my info and terms right. I hope this helps clarify the situation.

You got everything else crystal clear and correct, but this little bit that I bolded can be confusing(it is still not exactly wrong, just needs some clarification).

By general context you can infer that you are referring to the Heavy 1, blast profile; but by sentence context it seems like you are saying that the Blast qualifier is the main body of the weapon type(generally assumptive as Heavy 1).

You can, and we do in the SM Codex, have a Rapid fire, Blast weapon(Astartes Grenade Launcher firing Frag grenades on the Scout bikes); so weapons are not Rapid fire, or blast(although Hellfire types are, but the blast is ancillary to the type of: Heavy 1).

Also the Typhoon & Cyclone missile launchers are both Heavy 2, Blasts when firing Frag missiles; Thunderfire cannons are heavy 4.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

Thank you Kel. You are, of course, correct sir.
