Funny story: I'm a middle school science teacher in Oakland,
CA. Today was an incredibly crappy day at school. These days happen - nothing to write home about. Sometimes, however, a little retail therapy is exactly what I need. Because I'm a nerd, that usually means a stop at the
FLGS for a box of plastic crack. Sometimes it's Tau, sometimes it's Lizardmen, and sometimes it's Warmahordes. Today, though, it was going to be Blood Angels. Specifically, today it was going to be a razorback. I've been losing a lot of games lately, and I've recently decided to join the dark side - by which I mean acquire a ton of razorbacks and play a bog-standard razorspam list. It might not have as much character as the Descent of Angels that first drew me to the Knights of Baal, but it would mean winning some games, and that would (hopefully) reinvigorate my interest in the boys in red.
But I digress.
I was all set to be disappointed, because razorbacks are more expensive than I thought, when the dude who runs the
FLGS noticed me and said "ElectricPaladin! Just the guy I was thinking about."
Well, he didn't say that, exactly, but I think you get the point.
Anyway, he takes me over to the counter and pulls out an enormous plastic box full of minis, an Army Transport bag full of untouched foam, and says "take whatever you want - I've got to get rid of these."
After clarifying that he really did mean "free of charge" - it turns out that some kid went off to college and wanted to get rid of his old
40k and Confrontation models without going through the trouble of selling them - I did a little dance and started sorting the minis. The Emperor must really love teachers, because that turned my crappy day into my lucky day. I grabbed all the space marines and the Imperial Guard (for my friend who's just starting
IG) and a couple of the more interesting Confrontation models (for D&D minis), and the bag and foam. The full (totally incomplete) list of useful models includes:
1 Lascannon Predator
1 Heavy Bolter Razorback
About twenty marines of various configurations (including some really bizarre ones, like the assault marine with two chainswords -
wtf?)
As soon as I got home, I dumped the lot into some simple green (pictured below). I also tore off the turrets (they were attached with something more like rubber cement than proper glue), as I'm much more interesting in fielding them as razorbacks (I also ordered some Chapterhouse Studios magnetized razorback turrets) (you'll notice that the predator turret is in the 'green, too - waste not want not, the Emperor always said). Most importantly, I figured that this was as good a time as any to start a Dakka blog and show off my growing skills.
Anyway, here it is, where it all begins:
More to come in... as soon as these SOBs are stripped, whenever that is. I mean, really - based black and smeared with Dwarf Bronze? What was he thinking? Note: it looks a lot worse in person than it does in the picture.
