Hi, I am new to space wolfs and I want to create a competitive list at 1000pts, probably against space marines.

I've made changes to:

HQ
Rune Priest with chooser of the slain, bolt pistol, runic weapon, Living Lightning and Jaws of the Worlf Wolf - 110pts

TROOPS
9 x Grey Hunters w/ meltagun MotW, banner in a rhino - 195pts
8 x Grey Hunters w/ meltagun MotW, banner in a rhino - 185pts
5 x Grey Hunters w/ flamerin razorback with LasPlaz Razorback- 150pts
ELITES

3 x Wolf guard w/ power fists and combi metlas - 129pts

HEAVY SUPPORT
5 x Long Fangs w/ 4 Missiles - 115pts
5 x Long Fangs w/ 4 Missiles - 115pts


My plan is to put the rune priest in the rhino with the 8 grey hunters so he can shoot out of it.
The Wolf guard will each join a GH squad.

How can this be made better? It will most likely be against Space Marines if that changes anything..

Decent enough start, your core troops are solid, cant go wrong with GHs in a Rhino and the meltagun gives you some anti mech ability.
You need two choices as per the FoC so taking another unit of the same could work.
If you're going to stick with 5 mans, perhaps consider Razorbacks for them, they give those extra shots which can be nice.

Seeing as you want it to be competitive another unit of Fangs are always welcome.
After that style variations come into play, are you going for an overall theme/idea? (for eg you could take a podding Dreadnought, more GHs/Razors, some scouts with meltabombs for a deployment zone anti mech charge etc etc).

More troops, and don't be cheap on your Grey Hunters. They are what will carry the day. You want 8-10, a Wolf Standard, probably Mark of the Wulfen and possibly an Power Weapon as well. Rhinos are nice, but hybrid lists work well too so not every squad has to be mounted. One or two packs in Razorbacks or even Drop Pods is not totally unreasonable, despite what others think.

Its 999 points, how can it be improved?

Something is off with your point costs for your Grey Hunters. Pack 1 should be 200 points. I would just drop it down to 8 man anyways, this way if your Rhino is popped the Rune Priest can run into the other one.

Pretty solid list for the points. Pretty standard.

Would this list fair well against a SM list at 1000pts?

The list itself is pretty flexible. It should be able to take on anyone at 1000 points and stand a reasonable chance of winning. Your tactics may just have to change from opponent to opponent, but you have the firepower and the bodies for close combat.
