I was wondering if I could make a passable tau army with these figures. I have:

12 fire warriors
30 kroot
2 kroot hounds
1 krootox
3 crisis(one fireknife)
6 gun drones
3 stealth
1 marker drone
1 devilfish
1 hammerhead

This is the stuff I have, not my army list.

The person I'm playing will play IG, SM, or Orks

If you guys could help that would be great!

May the greater good be with you.

Points should be a little under 1000, depending on suit loadouts.

Suit HQ ?

12 Firewarriors
+ Devilfish w/ disruption pod

10 kroot + 2 hounds

20 kroot

Fireknife Team Lead + Gun drone

Other Crisis Team Lead + Gun Drone

Stealth team, each w/ Targeting Array

Hammerhead w/ Railgun, burst cannons, disruption pod, multi-tracker

Protect your Hammerhead -- it's your only railgun. And against hoard armies, the large blast is really nice. Try to keep your stealth suits at max range (jump into 16-18" to shoot, then jump back 6"). This will let the stealth field generators protect them. The gun drones on the single suits are for an extra wound or to soak up a high strength or low AP shot.

This is certainly an OK list to start with. You'll probably be OK against orks, but will likely run into a lot of trouble playing against marines and IG. In the future, I'd highly recommend you get a couple more crisis suits (deathrains and fireknives) and a broadside and remove the kroot. I'd probably also break those firewarriors into two squads and add a second devilfish to protected and transport them. This would give you much better firepower against MEQs and light vehicles, and give you some mobile troops for objective games.
