I have a fairly standard IG setup

2 x Leman Russ (Exec and Battle cannon)
1 x Hellhound
2 x Platoon Squads
2 x Sentinals
Yarrick
Lord Commissar

Basically 2 battle boxes with some added vehicles

A friend bought some necrons (Including the nasty Tomb Stalker from forge world)...not many though...just enough to play a bit of a fun game so he can see how much he can kill before i wipe him out.

My only problem is even though my army is vastly larger at the moment the necrons still pose what seems a huge threat now thanks to the removal of the instant death negating reanimation protocols. So it seems i can shell the crap out of a squad of warriors and kill 3/4 only for most to come back over and over. Fine thats the idea im sure.

My query i guess is peoples opinons on what types of weapons are best for downing Necrons in light of reanimation and what success people have had.

Heavy Bolters give a decent amount of shots and a good chance of wounding but most necrons have a good chance of passing their armour save against them and those which fail have a decent chance of passing reanimation (provided not all are taken down...which is unlikely as it turns out) So 50/50 to pass armour save and 33% to pass reanimation if they fail

Autocannons give less shots, almost gaurenteeed wounds and no armour save so just leaving the reanimation. These seem the ideal option.

Lascannons unless directed against the named characters which are usually hidden in squads or vehicles just plain seem pointless due to their low rate of fire and reanimation

What weapons have people had success with?

Weirdly one of the units ive had great success with are Penal Legionairres. If your lucky enough to get the knife fighters with the rending rule you can really tear through the necrons (especially with someone like Yarrick to reroll failed hits on charge)

Necron Warriors don't get armor saves from heavy bolters, since they're AP4. A standard LRBT with heavy bolters and a battlecannon can wreak some havoc on a squad of Warriors, or blast apart some Immortals. If you're having trouble with the tougher Crons like Immortals, Lychguard, or Crypteks, a Leman Russ Demolisher will do the trick.

Lascannons are a waste against infantry, but are nice to have if he's got some vehicles on the field. Autocannons are a great all around choice. If you have an autocannon squad and your company command orders them to Fire on my Target! you can negate the cover saves those Necrons would normally get.

You know what I like about you, SRM? You can spell. And capitalize correctly. And punctuate. Totally off-topic, but you used the word 'wreak' and didn't spell it wrong. It's so rare on the internet, I thought it deserved special mention.

And this is one of many reasons why I spend a lot of time correcting new posters and encouraging them to write in something resembling English. Glad my good grammar is appreciated!

As a necron player I can say my undead-legions would know fear(but they dont!) if they could understand what was about to happen when an IG player pulls out a basilisk or manticore on them....

Oh my god, Manticores against Necron Warriors? It isn't even funny how effective that is. Considering the lack of long ranged anti tank fire in your typical Necron army, you'll likely get all four salvos off. Then considering how often Crons are on foot? that's just brutal.
