This is a cool little "calculator"

Input your DoB and a few other details et voila.

Some other interesting info on the pages too, especially the "population since humans evolved" piece. I've read bits on this before, interesting to see how they try and calculate it etc.

Is there a calculator for human misery?

Apparently, our faithful U.S. government has a solution to that!

Overpopulation is the cause of most of the problems in the word today.

Too many greenhouse gasses? well if there were less people there would be less cars, and other fossil fuel burning pieces of technology.

Running out of resources? less people means more sustainable water and food resources.

An interesting quote from the site:
"despite major declines in the average number of children per women, population growth is projected to continue at least until the middle of the 21st century. Nearly all of this population growth will occur in less developed countries, in countries that already face major difficulties meeting the basic needs of their citizens"

What kind of person has a kid in a "country that already faces major difficulties meeting the basic needs of their citizens" ???

^Simple. The more kids you have, the likelier one will survive. It's twisted logic, sure, but it's why we've seen families in more 'developed' parts of the world have less and less kids. My grandparents had 7-8 siblings, my parents 3-5, and I have 2 sisters. As time goes on, and our ability to survive becomes better and better thanks to the technology we have available, we see less kids dying.

It's also about money. Have more kids, you have more ways of getting income. Again, it's something we see in decline in more 'developed' countries.

Except that vast majority of the world's resources are consumed by the relatively small population in the developed world. We could, in fact, wipe out 6 billion odd people, and if the 1 billion people living in the best conditions right now were to continue, we'd still be unsustainable.

On the other hand, if we all lived lived near poverty we could probably have 20 billion people and it'd be sustainable.

The real issue is how to have maintain a high living standard while making it sustainable.

For most people in the world, whether or not they have another child is not a choice made around the dinner table. Women are often given little choice in the matter, and are pressured into sex by their partners, who frequently take little responsibility for the children. There is also a problem with couples being dependant on their children for their care when they're older, and when the mortality rate is high people tend to have many kids to make sure there's still a few around when they're old.

We do know that making birth control available and getting people informed about it, and improving the status of women in society, and improving wealth (and as part of that improving life expectancy) works wonders in dropping the birth rate. Though this is something of a Catch-22, as the people who are born then consume significantly more resources.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
