Yellin' Yoof on a Scooter
|
A number of the guys in my gaming group run all (or most) of their troops in transports.I typically take a foot slogging army of slugga boys for the charge while running a few heavy options like battlewagons and walkers. One of the issues I've been having is tearing open those transports in time to get the charge with my boys. Usually, I'm taking them out with the Nobz powerklaw, but the problem with this is that they then get a free round moving, shooting, and/or assaulting before I can react. This leaves my mobs severely weakened and
susceptible to breaking during any subsequent attacks.
Now this isn't such a big deal with Eldar, Dark Eldar or Space Marines, whose transports are typically no more than armor 11 -- rokkit buggies, shoota boys with rokkits, kans with rokkits, boomguns and killkannons are all reliable options for taking these out quick and easy. But Necron Ghost Arks have shields that give them front and side armor of 13, and it's a real pain in the squig. Normally any vehicle with that kind of armor is a hard target that's worth taking out by itself, but with all those squishy Necrons inside, I want to save the main assault for them.
What's a warboss to do?

They have to pay through the roof for the av13 ghostarks.
Orks definitely need some ranged antitank. This is virtually always rockets. I recommend 9 kans with rockets or 9 rocket buggies, maybe even go for the koptas.
The mistake in this type of situation is to use your lootas to glance av13. Though I seem to think that if you glance the shields fall off?

Yeah, any kind of hit that gets through brings the shields down, but I have to pour a pretty crazy amount of firepower into it to get that. Even then I've still got the issue of actually bringing the Ark down with the shooting to get the assault.

You have to penetrate a vehicle with Quantum Shielding to stop it. A glance doesn't help. However, all Necron vehicles that have Quantum Shielding are Open-Topped, so glances do more damage than normal.

Lootas.
Ork have shooting options (including lootas), that allow you to break open a few weaker transports before they arrive. For what seems like an army that's supposed to be only for charging in, ork actually have some decent shooting options (including lootas), that are cheap enough so as not to unduly burden your ability to take other stuff (other than lootas).

This is correct.
Remember, that with living metal the Vehicles can ignore Shaken and Stunned results on a 2+ and a 4+. You really need to pen them, to put them down. At least, you have a 50% of destroying them with a Pen.

The usual orky approach - deffrollas and close combat vs the soft rear armour.
Ork shooting really struggles with anything above AV 12, as a rule.
