So a question came up. Say you have a unit of Wolf Scouts. They have Infiltrate and Scout. Can you:

1) Infiltrate 18" away from the enemy
2) Use your Scout move to end 12" away from the enemy
3) Move normally 6" towards the enemy
4) Charge 6" into the enemy

Some question as to whether or not you need to be 12.00-infinity-01" away from the enemy or if you can be exactly 12". Reading the rule myself, I thought you could be 12" away. Effectively, you had to be just over 11.99-infinity-99" away from the enemy.

Thoughts?

More than 12".....so no, no you can't.

Scout says you have to be more than 12" away. So, the only way to get a first turn assault (for units with standard movement) is if you're on a non-round base and use the pivot trick to gain some extra distance.

Of course, you could always just add a slightly thicker paint layer to one part of the base to get a first turn assault. But, not many players will speak to you ever again if you try that.

Don't fret, pet. It's an incredibly common mistake. Just be happy you didn't read it, and then spend almost a hundred dollars on models thinking to take advantage of it.

On a totally non-related note, anyone want to buy three boxes of assault scouts?

As others have said, you have to end your move more than 12 inches away, but Bikes, Cavalry and Units with the Fleet USR can get a 1st turn assault.

Use them with Shrike.

Step 1. Scout to just over 12" away
Step 2. Run a guaranteed minimum of 1".
Step 3. Profit!

You could also get a first turn assault with scout bikers, could you not?

Sure could, and can. There've been a few good threads in Tactics about them. They are kind of fragile for the points, though, and cost substantial cash, which is why I think you don't see them more.

Also, the ability to voluntarily Reserve in 5th edition makes turn charges less reliable and devastating.
