well a tyranid prime always is nice in smal games. and some hive guard. maybe even a tervigon as troop or 2.
drop a doom of malantai in there for some head cracking

I would think about taking a combat unit like hormagaunts to put the prime with. Tyranid warriors would be ideal if a little pricey if done properly, also have you considered converting yourself some mycetic spores andputting the doom inside to maximse its power. I always put it in one and it never fails to kill a squad of marines or two.

I saw that but didn't want to raise the subject. I wonder what you could take...

Genestealers are worth their weight in points, especially in smaller games where they're less likely to face uber-meaty CC heroes.

Hive Guard are great at any point value. I've run 2 squads of 3 in 1000pts, and not regretted it. They're decent in CC if a scout or similar squad comes calling, and excellent for playing hide-and-skewer with dreadnaughts, tanks, characters, heavy units..

Zoanthropes I find are hit and miss. They do provide extra synapse, so I tend to pair them with one of my Hive Guard squads.

Also: TERVIGON. At least one. So worthwhile.

I've been having some great success lately with this list at 1000 points. My games have been against Mech BA's and vanilla SM's...

HQ
x1 Tervigon w/Catalyst, Adrenal Glands, Toxin Sacs

Elites
x2 Hive Guard
x2 Hive Guard
x2 Venomthrope

Troops
x1 Tervigon w/Catalyst, Adrenal Glands, Toxin Sacs
x10 Termagaunts

Heavy Support
x1 Trygon w/Adrenal Glands, Prime

At 1000 points, I find its hard for opponents to deal with all of those T6 W6 models before they get into CC, and when they get into CC, anything they touch dies typically in 1 turn, or maybe 2. Gaunts screen the venoms and HG, HG screen the Tervigons, Tervigons screen the Trygon. Venoms provide 5+ cover when needed and allow you to turtle up the field since enemy assaulting units will take losses due to difficult terrain tests. Last night I killed 2/5 TH/SS terminators when they assaulted my front line of gaunts because of dangerous terrain

SitW also prevents pesky Librarians from using force weapons on your big bugs very effectively.

Oooh, that's good to know. I'd heard Venoms were a lot worse than that.
