Alright, so here's where I'm at. With all the talk of these updates for Chaos, I find I want to build up and start playing my favorite army again. But I can't just stop there. I also have been fantasizing about a second, ever since their update was just a little baby rumor: Necrons. However, as anyone can tell you, building up just one army can be costly, let alone two. So, to conserve cash, and also as a challenge to myself, I find myself wanting to do something epic we've all seen floating around. I'm going to make the 'Cron army out of the useless border sprue no one ever uses and throws away. I know this has been attempted before, but unfortunately that brave soul has just dropped off the face of the world, to my knowledge. Pics of the very thing I'm speaking about (meaning the very first thread) are here, courtesy of easternfringe.com: http://easternfringe.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6739
I have plans to make this stand out even more than they already would (Not Doomthumbs-level, and SFW, but definitely classify them as a "joke" army), but here's the thing I need to know before I begin this journey; Knowing full well they are technically made from GW material, and for that matter, made from scratch, would they be allowed at a tournament? I'm inclined to think they'd give me a warning at the first one, and then from then on outright ban them, but I'm not sure. It may be that they've already been banned as well. It would most definitely suck to make this full thing, and it end up being just a novelty centerpiece to talk about.

Go for it.
I actually like them. They have a sort of 8-bit feel which is really cool (and strangely fitting, if you think about it)

Haha that was definitely one of the ways I saw this going. Another one was, to quote myself from October:
Woodcrons. Necrons who love their Tomb World so much, that they worry about Global Warming from by-products of their technology, and have opted to be made out of wood from the planet's dense forests. Their lord is Iem Hadüsh, the All-Gorer (Get it? Al Gore?).

Looks like I just found a use for all my spare sprues. Thanks.
But seriously, this looks pretty good, I'm not sure I like the immortal so much but everything else actually looks amazing there.

I play:
Imperial Fists - 9000 pts
Tyranids - 1500 pts

I do want to stress, I'm going to do everything in my power to make them look like my own creation. The last thing I want to do is just copy someone else. And I do agree the Immortal could be better.

Lol if you showed up with that , I'd still play you hahaha. The TO might think differently but I've played against wacky chaos daemons before so it'd be cool with me (as long as approximately the right size and shape)
If all else fails, I'll just take off my glasses. All grey fuz to me at that point lol.

Tournament legality, of course, depends on TO. If it was my tournament, I'd say go for it, so long as it was painted correctly, and made from GW sprues.

I think the biggest problem will be WYSIWYG here. Most wargear does look pretty distinctive, and you've got an army made out of sprue. I think that as long as you do take the effort to make sure that each gun looks at least remotely like the original (same vague shape and size), you'll be fine.
They can't nail you for not using GW materials, though. Technically, GW made those sprues.

Depends on the Tournament Organiser, some people might think you are being annoying and won't allow it.

There is no single answer for this question. Just as with just about any other tournament-related question, it depends entirely on the tournament, who is running it, and in some cases who else is playing in it.
If the end result actually looks good (as in, some effort has gone into construction, so it doesn't just look like you're thumbing your nose at players who have gone and bought actual models), and the 'models' are easily recognisable for what they are supposed to be, you'll probably not have too many issues. But it's ultimately at the whim of whoever is running the event you try to enter them into.
At the very least, I would recommend showing them to a prospective TO before paying your registration.

Technically you could make paper mache Necrons, as long as you used White Dwarf magazines for the paper...
It's still GW product...

There is no 'technically' about it. This ' GW product' rule is not a universal standard. GW-run (and sometimes GW-sponsored) events often have such a rule... but if you are clearly just taking the proverbial, don't expect that any 'technicality' is going to get you around the Tournament Organiser deciding that you're just being an ass and refusing to let you play.

That is amazing, I would absolutely play that army.
If I was TO'ing i'd also let it slide, just for the factor to Games Workshop.

I like it
But needs to have distinct WYSIWYG feel to it (paint all of one weapon one colour maybe?) and needs to really make sure opponent can easily tell warriors from immortals, etc...

I agree with this. Another option is just looking for cheap bits from eBay or something like that, but I don't know if it would ruin the image of the army or whatever.
