The eldar created the Chaos God Slaanesh. General Knowledge.
The Dark Eldar are the "true Eldar" while Craftworld Eldar are more like the Amish of the Eldar Species.
Now here's my question:
Which of these two did the "origonal Eldar" more closely resemble? Did they look like Dark Eldar and the Craftworlds changed their ways? Or did they look like Craftworld eldar and later chose to change to something that looks more hellish (for lack of a better description)?
It seems to me they would more look like Dark Eldar, seeing as how their excesses are what birthed Slaanesh and they still seem to relish the pleasure of pain and torture.
Unless I missed something in the Eldar and Dark Eldar codecies.

Well according to fluff, it seems they would have been both. The eldar that live on the craft worlds and on exodite worlds, left far in advance, or right before it was the point of no return, of slaanesh's birth
It seems that the "pleasure cults" as well as the murder cults, drug gangs, rape cults, orgy cults and such, all existed at the same time as the eldar who thought restraint and rigid path culture was safe and wise.
And the Dark eldar think of themselves as "true eldar" for the same reason people tend to point and laugh at the young teenage male in High school who has chosen to remain a virgin for religious reasons. They see him as a prude and a loser because he doesn't indulge in the same activities as they do

The answer is both. The pre-Fall Eldar changed over time.
The Craftworld Eldar aesthetic models itself off of classical Eldar styles and virtues. The existence of so many Webway gates around the galaxy (built before the Fall) with wraithbone and Craftworld Eldar aesthetics shows it to be an ancient style.
The Dark Eldar styles are that of the corrupt and decadent Eldar immediately right before the Fall.
In that sense, you can see the Craftworld Eldar as neo-classical style.

Seems obvious now. I was under the impression that the craftworlds left their society almost like a "screw you guys- this is getting way too wierd for me" as they were beginning to move more towards the way Dark Eldar exist now.

A bit of each.
1) Craftworld Eldar
- they retain the aesthetics of the past, but have chosen a restrained way of life, and in so doing become less than themselves since they have to deny their very natures
2) Dark Eldar
- they follow the decadent lifestyle of the Eldar Empire before the Fall, but are also less than themselves because they have no control over their nature, instead, their nature controls them.

I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.
'She sat on the corner, gulping the soup down, uncaring of the heat of it. They had grown more watery as of late she noted, but she wasn't about to beggar food from the Imperials or the "Bearers of the Word." Tau, despite their faults at least didn't have a kill policy for her race.' |

Basically, the Eldar race has been divided into three faction:
The Eldar
- The Craftworld Eldars that we know. These foresaw the fall of the Eldar race, and fled the scene, to avoid getting dragged down together with their more "lusty" kind. To keep their hyper sensitive minds from depraving, like the Dark Eldar, they take up highly disciplined ways of life, such as becoming Aspect Warriors, various Psykers, bonesingers and maaaany other disciplines. The whole "concept" is simply to distract them from following their needs - which was the very reason Slaanesh was born (/created) to begin with.
The Exodites
- The Exodites were the first of the Eldar to leave their homes. But unlike the Craftworld Eldars, these fled to what we know as "Maiden World". I believe, that these are the closest thing to the Ancient Eldars ways of life - they just lack the technology. They are primitive and much more in pact with the nature around them.
The Dark Eldar
- As they are Eldars, they are, too, bound to be consumed by Slaanesh. What keeps them from this faith, however, is to torture, kill, and any other kind of taking pleasure in mean acts. Therefore they let their dark needs dictate their ways and in the process, survives.

The 'original' culture was probably somewhere in between. The Craftworld Eldar are know to deny their nature much more than the original culture did, but then the original culture slowly turned into something much more like the Dark Eldar...
