Hey all, new to Dakka. Glad to be here!
That aside, I would like to be clarified of something.
As it were, I've read a few codexs and have come to the conclusion that it is possible to supplement one army with another, essentially creating one single army via two seperate rule-sets and models. Although I was skeptical at first, seeing as doing so could potentially break the game beyond belief (although absolutely awesome in theory) I did find rules within the actual codexs that said it was a viable option to do so either way.
I don't remember the edition(s) I read, but I do believe (at current) that it was from an outdated Sisters 'dex. My question is: are these rules still relevant?
A few key-notes:
1) I am not considering this for tournament play, merely shop or at-home play only.
2) I am in no way intentionally trying to break the game, so please, I would ask that you be as respectful in your response as possible (don't flame me for asking a simple question)
I am taking into consideration that, if viable, only like-sided armies be able to co-battle (NOT Marine/Ork, Tau/Nid etc).
My Army example:
Marine army with SoB Seraphim squad, 3 IG squad & 2 Basilisks - whereas the Seraphim would take up one fast-attack slot in the Marine army, the 3 IG Inf taking up 3 Troop spots and the Basilisks taking up 2 Hvy Support spots etc
In detail: Base Marine army (1 HQ, 2 Tacticals, 2 Dev-Marines, 1 Vet-Vanguard, 1 Crusader) supplemented by a Seraphim squad, an Immolator, 2 Grey Knight Terminator squad's in drop-pods, 1 Black Templar Tac-Squad, 1 Black Templar Sword Brethren squad and 1 Emperor's Champion.
Now, although I would be creating from a base Marine Army, I would (presumptuously) use individual rules per army-specific squad (Sisters rules for Seraphims, Templar for Templar etc)
Simply put: According to current rules, is this army/idea legal? Remember, I am NOT considering this as tournament standard.
Also: wtf happened to Deathwatch?? Is there still an applicable rule-set for them in table-top? Or have they temporarily been phased out? So far, all I've heard is that their conversion kits exist merely for aesthetic reasons regarding the Deathwatch RP, not necessarily for table-top means - T/F?

Thanks for taking the time to read all of this.

This was possible with Daemon hunters codex and Witch Hunters codex back in 3rd ed. Both have been replaced with new dexes.

According to current rules, this is not legal.
The sisters codex has been updated in 2 editions of white dwarf last year, so that is now the current codex.
However, at home, with your friends, that is completely different, and if you all have fun, then there is nothing to stop you.
At the store, it's definitely a no for pick-up games, but again, talk with your friends and see what they have to say.

There are a few different ways to go about this. (1 of which has no rules backing what so ever).
Detachments - I forget the page number in the BRB (not small), but basically you get two FOC
Apocalypse - 3000+ points per side, take whatever the heck you want.
House Rules - I've played a number of small games with 2 different armies utilizing 1 FOC. However, it was 2 vs2 or 1 v 2, and each person was only responsible for 1 of the 2 armies.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Personally I would have no problem playing against a combined list like that. To me it would be a nostalgia thing.
Man I miss my old Daemon Hunters Codex. I loved the flavor of having 2 GK squads and a GKGM with 2 platoons of IG and a few storm troopers.
It just added a great dynamic to the army lists I wanted to run.

Awesome replies, thanks guys and gals.
So in regards to Apoc, would this FOC be a legitimate, viable rule-bound option? Or is this army setup completely lost/forgotten according to ALL rule-sets, including individual codexes?
I believe it was the Daemon Hunters codex which I read about supplementing, unfortunately. Thanks for reminding me.
@Happyjew: Which one had the no-rules backing?? lol
@ Hisdudeness: You've also mentioned Apocalypse. I don't know the rule-set for Apoc yet as I've never played before, but are you saying this is would be a legal option in Apoc?
I'm new to tabletop altogether, although a long time Warhammer fan. I've just been reading a lot of the different 'dexes so far and getting together/finishing painting my AoBR set to learn before I start building my actual FOC. My friend has a Tau battle-force I'm going to try and best with my Marines and another Ironclad I picked up.
Oh, and if anyone has info about that Deathwatch question I asked: please, by all means let me know!
Thanks again

Apocalypse takes the FOC and throws it out the window. It's designed for you to basically take all your units and field them simultaneously.
The house rules version has no actual rules backing.

Honestly, there really isn't anything you can't do with 40k and your own house rules. You can make lasguns strength 10 AP 1 if you want. You can have carnifex in an Ultramarines army. You can have a soda can be be a new awesome type of land raider with its own special rules.
If you want to, you can have this kind of army. No one is stopping you. Especially if you won't be playing in tournaments.

I highly recomend you play the AoBR a few games to get a feel, and stick with the normal 3 game types until you have an idea of whats going on.

Ahh, well that makes sense. Thanks for the heads up about Apoc. Thanks to everyone for your awesome answers, too!
Honestly, I had previously been recommended Apoc by another fellow table-top gamer/friend of mine, as soon as I got a handle on the base game, to get into Apoc.
Initially, Titans were what really pushed me into choosing to finance an army at all.
-and so it begins..
