I went to my local shop to play D&D and to paint miniatures. The D&D crowd was never there on the days I had available but the 40Krs were. I watched a few games, was able to buy some IG troops for REALLY cheap and found I could convert some old Warzone figures over. Since then, my army has grown, my skills have grown and my list of friends has grown.

Dragonlance (Dragons of Autumn Twilight) opened my eyes to the idea of fantasy gaming when I got the novel free with a random D&D computer game I picked up around 87.

Then found Epic (aka Adepticus Titanicus the following year via a mates White Dwarf in art class. Found a copy of Space Hulk and Blood Bowl at a local Trago Mills when I lived back in Cornwall and the rest is history.

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high

Parents played D&D as kids, I was introduced to it at a young age (around ten) Warhammer 40k I was introduced to i part by my best friend, and in part by Dawn of War 2. I then went back to play the original series.
I got into table top shortly thereafter, after watching some battle reports, and learning how many of my frends actually play. I was rather suprised the number was so high.

My sister (who is 2 years older than me) actually got into roleplaying back in grade 7 and I loved fantasy games so she let me watch her and her friends play and then a few of them played 40k so they showed me some miniatures and let me play a game, which I lost terribly. Then I didn't play 40k for the next 15 or so years, but played D&D ever since. A couple of work buddies were talking about starting 40k at a party about 2-3 years back so I asked them about it and we all decided to pick an army and buy the battleforces the following weekend. Been hooked since!

I "grew up" in a game store my father plays historicals. One day while he was playing a game a small group of guys were playing 2nd ed 40K with Space Marines Vs Eldar. I started to take an interest in it then when I was in middle school a friend of mine brought a Marneus Calgar model to school with him for a "show-n-tell" speech in speech and Drama class. I asked him about it and got started with my guard army a couple months later.

A friend started playing and brought the catalogue of models into school. Pretty soon a club started, i initially wanted to play tau (the whole gothic theme wasnt my thing then) but marines were in the starter set and i ended up with 10,000pts of marines (over many years).

Because RT was written as a melange of Judge Dredd, Dune, Starship Troopers, Foundation, Deathworld and about half-a dozen other "classic" SF and comics that I was reading in the 80s.

Had it been 'inspired' by marvel spandex heroes, I would have given it a miss.

My brother got RT from a friend as a birthday present, and had no-one around but me to try it out on.

He got out of 40k (and Fantasy which we already played) but i stayed hooked.

We started with the old beakie marines and the 3-to-a-box rhinos against the beerkeg-plasmacannon toting punk rocker orks

We had a joint subscription to WD back when it was an awesome gaming mag.

Not every shadow, but any shadow

I've always been an avid reader of military sci-fi. Forever War, Starship Troopers, A Mote in God's Eye, Far Stars War etc.

I bought a copy of the original "Space Marine" by Ian Watson and it was a great read.

Space Hulk was one of the first games I bought for my Commodore Amiga and it , along with Hired Guns, was one of the best games I have ever played.

Went quite for awhile until my son bought Dawn of War and he was suitably impressed that I knew so much about "his" game.

I introduced him to the joys of modelling the figures last year and since then he and I have been having a ball !

Waaaay back in the dim and distant past a friend showed me the 2nd edition rulebook. I really liked the fluff and the concept, however no one I knew played it, so I didn't bother. Spin forward to when Dawn of war was released on PC and I played and played and played it, and the expansions. Then a friend revealed to me that he had been collecting Blood angels since the 3rd edition, another friend had been secretly collecting Nids. When Dow: Dark Crusade came out, that was it. I had to have a Necron force. I have since got rid of the 'crons (Thankfully in time before the new codex came out and ruined their fluff for me), got about 4000 points of Orks and am now looking into the rich pickings of an imperial side.

When I was on the last terms of Gymnasium (german High School) there was a gaming club nearby and a friend was member. So we went there in the big break before afternoon lessons and played 2nd Edition 40k there.

the AD&D group I knew in high school got into WHF, so I started painting. After I got out of High School, someone brought up BFG after getting back from GenCon or something with a few starter boxes. So I bought three starters, built a fleet. We played weekly, 2 or 3 games. Someone I knew from another RPG group played 40K for years and said he would play BFG, if I played 40K. So that was that, and I have played since.

I had (ex) friends who played fantasy and got me hooked into it as well, after swearing I'd never get into Warhammer Fantasy because of the cost (THAT turned out well...). Eventually, I started a Chaos army and wanted to run mostly Daemons, but I just didn't have the models to do it properly in the 6th edition Hordes book. Then, the books split, Daemons became their own entity and some came in plastic, and I started them up full swing. I loved the Soul Grinder model for 40k, so I just said "What the hell, I have the rest of the army already, just on square bases. I can always try it, see if I like 40k..." Haven't looked back since

I had a friend back in middle school (1999) who lived in the UK for a while and came back playing Dark angels, so I bought some marines, then guard, then empire. I"ve been geeking out ever since. I even finished a room in my basement my wife calls the 'man cave' that is basically full of 40k and fantasy stuff.
