When I got out of 40K, the Necrons had just come on board. I was vaguely familiar with the original background, but now I understand that they have been completely retconned (Can ya believe it? That GW could do such a thing?! ).

Anyway, could someone outline the differences between the new and old fluff?

Thanks

on the forum. Obviously

-C'tan no longer the masters

-Necrons not as scary (but they are still pretty menacing)

-some necron lords have a sense of honor (though it is generally limited to only other necrons)

-No FTL travel, necrons now have to hijack the webway

-There is now a royal hierarchy, with different dynasties.

so the necrons are no longer the slaves to the C'tan?

No. Not largely.
there is enough leeway that it is possible to make an army where they are slaves (due to the presence of free shards), but the necron race is largely free from the C'tan

They hijack the webway? News to me. I thought their own corridor thing was pretty cool.

Didn't know they weren't slaves either. Darn, necrons are lame now. I thought the old necrons were fantastically grimdark.

They use these machines called dolmen gates to force their way into the webway. They have to move quickly though, because the webway will become aware of this and retaliate. I didn't like this bit of the fluff. Really lame :/

Or perhaps they are doing the Walk like an Egyptian dance to the Terminator theme?

You know the constant Egyptian motif doesn't really stand up past aesthetics. The Necrons aren't religious, hell they enslaved their own gods. There's no Nile analogue (or anything natural for that matter) which is a huge part of ancient Egyptian culture. Perhaps the royal hierarchies have some Egyptian similarities but I wouldn't know for certain.

They do make a big deal out of death, well before the biotransferrance at least, but without knowing specific customs and rituals it's impossible to say if it is Egyptianesque at all.

Honestly they are hardly any more space Egypt than they used to be in 3rd Edition.

Asimo77 is quite right. I can really only think of 4 things that are similar between the two cultures.

1. Architecture. Pyramids, obelisks etc.
2. Hierarchy. The incredible power and status of a Pharaoh and high priests.
3. Obsession with death and eternal life.
4. Fascination with astronomy.

All of these things can really be related to most ancient civilizations.

I wondered about that - is there any reference to them not having FTL anymore besides the fact that in ages past they had to use STL and now have tech to use the Dolman Gates? The fluff does talk about their ships quite a bit but not about how they get from target to target in the modern era?

re the genral feel - its pretty much TOMB KINGS IN SPACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! at least IMO

some nice new models - even if I would have liked a Khalida equivalent..........

Yeah I thought that was early Necron Empire prior to the War in Heaven etc and had not actually invalidated the non warp FTL drive they used to have in BFG etc? I'll haev another look through the codex.

It has not really changed, beside the C`tan issue, altough that is also fitting, because C`tan had the Necrons under their controll before and perhaps shards even after the long sleep.

The Rest is just new to us, but doesnt contradicts the old fluff. Espacally when you read Xenology (which you should do, its one of the best background books at all).

So... Let me get this right - Not only do they force their way into the webway. But they... Also know their way around in there?

Oh, well... I guess a wizard gave them the maps to the place -.-

In the belly of the whale.

Think Tomb Kings in space, and you get a rough idea of what they are like now as opposed to the menacing innumerable warriors who want to eradicate all life they once were...

There's a space trinket collector, who goes round stealing art and vintage snow lobes. There is also a Necron Overlord who is best friends with the Blood Angels and they go round skipping through flowery meadows together... Yeah.

In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium, there are only necrons and space marines skipping through flowery meadows.

Ah, for the old days.

Sigh...
