Hello all!
So, I recently starting playing 40k (About 2 months ago). Initially I bought the blood angel codex but before I bought a large amount of figures I traded it in for a grey knights codex because they appealed more to me. I know have about 1000 points worth of grey knights painted and ready to go. After playing a few games I like them but I have urges to play other armies. Some of the others just seem more fun personally. I feel like it is bad though to just suddenly start collecting another army (and its expensive!).
Has this happened to any else? Essentially, is this normal? Also, advice needed on what I should do!

I used to do that when i was younger. I would make an army then two months later sell it and start another. It gets expensive and ive thrown idk how much money into this game. Not that its bad just the way i did it i threw it away. I would say if you REALLY want to switch again thats fine but choose 1 army and untill you finish that army and i mean full size fully built and fully painted not to go onto another one.

Try to borrow the other armies you're interested in to see if it's not just a "Oooh shiny" feeling. What I mean is that you're interested in other armies just because they're different from yours, rather than the fact that you're disappointed in your own. I've tried out 4 armies so far over a rather short period compared to most gamers on here (I started on Christmas of 2010), and found that my switching was more due to the fact that they were different from my own rather than an actual disappointment in the armies I owned before said new one.
I've currently touched upon (From newest to oldest, with my reasoning):
Necrons (Loved the models but didn't like how they played)
Chaos Space Marines (Love the models, don't like the age of the book. I am building up the army in anticipation of their new book however.)
Codex: Space Marines (Dawn of War, the fluff, and Black Library novels are the forces not making me get rid of this army since I prefer Chaos over them)
Orks (My main army, I love their playstyle, models, and capacity for conversions)

Dang, I sold an army of Orks because I built too many and was overloaded with the painting required. However I was a barely-teenage newcomer to 40k.
I think it's okay to be spontaneous, just be wary of the economical side. I'd really like a squad of fire warriors, just one, although obviously I'm not talking about whole armies here. On the other hand, it was being spontaneous that got me into my joint-favourite army (Dark Eldar) - I bought a Harlequin Death Jester resin model when they were just released as I loved it and its detail. Then I had a little skim over Eldar and Dark Eldar out of interested, and next thing I knew I had half a thousands points to build

I'm spontaneous
I've played, in approx chronological order (and not counting the non- 40k games like Necromunda and Epic) :
Lamenters SM
Scythes of the Emperor SM
Orks (24 years and still going strong.. WAAAAGH! )
Witchunters (mainly SOB, some Stormtrooper support)
Daemonhunters (Pure GK)
Necrons (back when their fluff was good and their units were few )
Tau
Black Templars
Tyranids
Daemons
DE (with the new release...i resisted for as long as it took for the Talos to come out, and the rest is history)
I've got rid of several armies over the years, as rules changes, playstyle changes or abominable fluff (or both) soured me on the army.
I still play :
BT
Orks
Dark Eldar
Daemons
I don't even want to think how much money i've thrown at this hobby over the last 25 years

This helps a lot! I have a few friends at my local shop who have a large quantity of figures of different armies. I will try to see if they will let me use them! I intend to start a second army but not until much later.

You could also borrow/beg/buy/steal a codex, and try a game with figures proxied from another army, as a friendly against a friend.
That would give you the feel of the army even if no-one has the army available to lend.
I tried out DE with the new codex this way, proxying with my orks, as I couldn't afford more than the codex when it hit, and i've always liked the bad guys

Best thing I think is to proxy around until you find an army that you just can't stop coming back to or that you just simply fall in love with.
