Short Question: Is Wonder Woman really a nice person?

Long Question: Wonder Woman doesn't strike me as a very nice person and is very high and mighty. Aloof is probably a more fair description. I have only read one comic and once watched an animated film which basically involved her compromisng her values so it doesn't count. Anyway, am I the only who thinks having a heroine walk around preaching that all men in 'mens world' could learn something by embracing female values. But then she goes around bashing crminals brains in... She's not a very easy character to relate to in my view since shes more a (IMO skewed) ideal than a personality. Its not because shes a woman, for example I really liked Jaraels portrayel in Star Wars KoToR because she was a strong female character but still had a neat personality/gentler side that was believably feminine and could be sympathised with. I just can't see that in Wonder Woman.

Part of the reason I ask is that I heard a rumour that they were/might be making a Wonder Woman film and I just can't see how that could appeal to a popular audience. She also doesn't have many interesting villains. Much as I like Giganta, they're all pretty goofy when you get down to it.

Can't remember who wrote it.It was the one where Circe comes back and tries to absorb Wonder Womans powers and becomes a figure of wrath for all women who've been wronged so goes on a killing spree. Its also the one that introduces Giganta and Cheetah as becoming less bestial when they use their powers. It also had Hercules in who turned out to be a git and ended with Wonder Woman implying she was going to sodomise hercules at one point after having tied him up. lol.

Egh. Well, to be fair, some writers really do not write Wonder Woman well at all, which is where you get the excessive I HATE MEN CAUSE I'M WONDER WOMAAAAAN bullgak. It's not that representative of the character at all.

It's the same reason Frank Miller should not be allowed to write Batman stories any more.

Wonder Woman was supposed to be nice, yes. But a lot of writers don't get her.

She's the poster child for the phrase depending on the writer.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Ah just looked it up.

The issue was Who is Wonder Woman?

edited by Allan Heinburg, Terry Dodson and rachel Dodson

to be fair it wasn't that bad and the preface said it was meant to be an omage of sorts to the origional writer. A man of dubious and debatably lewd character from what I've heard.

I get what you mean its one thing that prevented me getting involved with superhero comics in general they're too bloated and are confusing to anyone wanting to get involved. Compare that to say KoToR or Legacy where you have a linear plot running through one single narrative from start to finish and a concise set of characters; theres no competition really to my mind.

BTW Melissia I was watching this review and it reminded me of the quote underneath your profile. I don't know if you've ever watched any confusedmatthew, he's one of those youtube movie reviewers who has his moments. Anyway, I was wondering if you agreed with his view on female characters. Its close to the beginning. I'am not sure, I don't see how you could write, say, a sister of battle in the manner hes describing. He argues that female characters shouldn't be written 'as men' and I'am not entirely sure what he means by that particularly.

This is why I gave up on comic books. I got tired of writers redoing the basic premise of a character because they are either trying to get sales from shock value or seem to have no confidence in creating a new character, and end up dumping a crapload of rebooted origin stuff on an established character.

You can't figure out how a superhero action flick with a busty main character in a skimpy costume will appeal to popular audiences?

have you seen Suckerpunch?

It is a formula that has worked in many a film and will continue to work because: tits>plot

There two points I must raise in objection.

1-I had actually forgotten about Suckerpunch until you brought it up. Most people view that sort of film as pretty low brow which limits the appeal and whether the film's actually good. You can't IMO get away with what you can in a comic in a film adaptation.

2-There were no busty women in suckerpunch, that much I remember besides the Oni fight and the clockwork Nazi fight.

Suckerpunch is one long nerd boy's wet dream. It is gun porn with hot girls playing dress up. It is very clear what the objective is in that movie and how it earns wwhatever appeal it garnered.

We knowthat Wonder Woman won't be played by a woman without certain "assets", and what the movie lacks in acting/plot it will make up for in knee high boots and 3D chest shots...

The formula/blueprint will be followed...

No, the appeal of suckerpunch was the sheer outragiousness of the concept of a five foot tall woman fighting three twenty foot Oni and winning. I went to watch it because it was funny not because I was going to wander off into the toilets after the movie. You're being far too conservative and prudish with your use of the term 'porn' I think. Desperate Housewives has more skin n sex scenes than suckerpunch. lol.

When has a movie ever made up for lack of plot/acting with sexy female leads? Look at catwoman for example.

For that reason and others I quite honestly think a Wonder Woman movie would be pretty poor myself.

Who Wonder Woman is seems to me more defined by whoever is writing her at the moment than anything else. So much for a strong female character.

Actually, come to think of it, PowerGirl is a much better character even with her "boob window" (RIP).

Do a search of this very foum and you will find a thread that discussd this movie. The motivation for many was as I describe.

And I said "gun porn" not "porn". Gun porn is hot girls in fetishy costumes with gun jumping about seductively while they shoot eveything in site. it is sexualized action violence, and it was one of th fundamental building blocks of that film...
