I'm considering starting a Space Wolves army, but having never experienced much of Space Wolves I don't really know where to start. So anyway, I wrote a 1000 point list to start off with. Now again, I know very little about Space Wolves units, so I don't know if list is any good at all.
Its as follows;

HQ
Logan Grimnar 275

TROOPS
10 Grey Hunters with plasma gun, power weapon 175

10 Grey Hunters with 2 meltaguns, power weapon 175

DEDICATED TRANSPORT
Drop Pod 35

ELITES
5 Wolf Guard with terminator armour, thunder hammer + storm shield, cyclone missile launcher 225

FAST ATTACK
5 Skyclaws with meltagun, power weapon. 115

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please give feed back and tell me how I can improve this list.
Thank you.
Try razorback grey hunters.
Else I recommend squad of 8 or so with melta, standard, powerweapon, mark of wulfen, lead by combimelta, fist wolf guard all in a rhino.
Then take a good number of longfangs, sometimes giving them a 'back is a good idea.
Rune priest is a great HQ with jaws.
Centre the list around those three and you will be doing all right. Logan is really expensive by the way, llok elsewhere. GOod luck finding missile launchers
If you can replace the skyclaws with scouts. They are much more cost effective. But if you drop Logan and put a wolf priest with the skyclaws and beef up the models in the unit you can do damn good. You get preferred enemy and you get an extra attack on the charge. It makes up for the lower weapon skill trust me. You can either get a unit in the back field to cause some destractions and blow up any vehicles that are camping back there or you can shove 16 models down there face with PE.
1000 points is a small size game for Logan if you aren't doing Logan's Heroes.
Skyclaws are just not very good. They have no staying power in close combat. Their volume of attacks is impressive, but against anything WS6 or WS7 and anything with Initiative 5 they will just get wiped. They're too easy to hit. More hits == more wounds == more saves == more dead. They're also more vulnerable to enemy shooting.
Grey Hunters don't strictly need Wolf Guard pack leaders, but its generally the way of things. I'm glad you are steering away from Power Fists. They aren't worth the points on Grey Hunters.
Wolf Guard Terminators aren't uber-killy on their own really. Not compared to other options. Its still not a bad way to go, but they'll be exposed to enemy shooting unless you leave Logan in a different squad and put them in the Pod. Then they'll be a bit exposed to enemy shooting.
You don't have a lot of shooting. Rune Priests, Long Fangs, Razorbacks, Land Speeders, Predators... All of these weapons platforms you are missing entirely. Some are better than others, but even at 1000 points you'll have more targets you need to suppress or destroy at range than you can currently handle.
Hey there,
I think this might be a lit to look at trying at low points games as it covers lots of the bases and give you the oppertunity to get to grips with the army. The list is a bit generic but it is decent.
Spoiler:
Rune priest -115
chooser of the slain, melta bomb
Wolf guard -129
3x guard with combi-melta + PF
Wolf scouts -105
5x scouts, MOTW, 1x melta bomb
melta gun
Grey hunters -185
8x hunters
MOTW, wolf banner, rhino
Grey hunters -185
8x hunters
MOTW, wolf banner, rhino
Long fangs -140
5x missile launchers (6x fangs)
Long fangs -140
5x missile launchers (6x fangs)
The space wolves have many strengths but their special characters are not amoungst them IMHO. Logan is a massive chunk of points that you could invest in more effective units... like a landraider, 2 troops choices or 2 full squads tooled out with missile launchers. Unless you are lacking the models don't take a character that eats up your points like that.
The long fangs can pump out lots of missiles which is great for anti-troop and anti-armour and if you want to try a different load out you can be surprised by how much damage 5 heavy bolters can do. They are one of the best support units in the game.
Wolf guard are a mandatory choice to bump the Ld of your troops and to add some extra special + CC weapons into a sqaud. For 29 points you can have a model striking with 2 attack(3 on charge) powerfist attacks with a combi-melta. They give you a second chance to pop armour with the combi-melta for those all important times you can't afford to fail and when they charge it's another 3 chances to tear open that can. You should stick one on each of the GH and one on the wolf scouts to spread out their skills and equipment.
Mounted GH in a rhino let you rush the board and lay out fire with the rune priest or the squad's melta guns depending on what you want to do. At least for the next 6 months this is a solid choice for troops (we'll see what 6th ed brings).
Wolf scouts are good for messing up the enemy and getting into their flank with melta guns, bombs and a decent combat squad.
It's not the size of the blade, it's how you use it.
