But is a Nidzilla list even remotely viable anymore? Last I played the army regularly was under the 4th edition codex. I still own 6 Carnifexes.

I was thinking something like a Tyrant (possibly the Swarmlord), 3x3 Hive Guard, and 2 Tervigons for starters.

Do Tyranid Monstrous Creatures have a shot in the current environment? How would you expand on what I've suggested above?

I have friend who plays nids and complains that Tanks dominate the game but tanks can be destroyed by a single hit whereas Monstrous Creatures cannot. My friend also sees a lot of success as much as he likes to complain. He even won a 2v2 game practically by himself one time!

I don't know much about nids but from my experience playing against them it seems you need a good balance of swarm and Monstrous Creatures. Tervigons always seem like a successful unit.

Matt from MiniWarGaming has a lot of success with his lists maybe some of his videos will help

Good luck!

Peace Out!
Jonny!

I love using Tervigons to slap down tanks by using the swarmlord to outflank them...I think its the swarmlord? Plus, using the Ymgarl Genestealers to burst out of terrain nd multi assault tanks that are parked to close together.

So far its working pretty well!

Swarmlords don't allow outflanking tervigons, that's Hive Tyrants with Hive Commander.

Bad players get multi-charged by ymgarls against his non-moving tanks.

In a word....no. Dark eldar poison spam, Space Wolf Rune Priests (Jaws) and missile spam and the more recent GK codex with wall to wall force weapons means MCs are basically toast. Not to mention they are about 25% over priced in the current codex, and you have a recipe for disaster.

Outside of those lists (which make up most of the "top tier") yeah, MCs do okay.

MC's are fun as it gets. Sure, they can sometimes get instant killed, or taken down by anti-tank weapons, but not often.

I've had great luck with Tyrants, Tervigons, Trygons, and Tyrannofexes backed up by Termagants and sometimes Hormagaunts. I have found that flooding the board with speedbumps (generally the termagants) and a lot of T6 creatures allows at least some of the larger bugs to survive the game.

On the other hand, sometimes everything dies horribly to power weapons/AP1 and I get routed. But that doesn't happen too often.

edit: I will be buying a few of the Tyrannofex kits - I agree, they're incredible.

One reason I chose to start with Necrons was so I wouldn't have to kit-bash out Tervigons. Then this happens
At least when I do finally start in on the Nids (and believe me I will), they will hopefully have an updated codex and 6th ed rules helping against ID.

Nid MC's are really bad now, they overcompensated pretty severely due to how well they were doing last edition.

Take 5 tervigons, 2 gaunt squads, zoans, hive guard.

at 1850 it's disgusting unless you're DE or I don't even know.

You can get 5 MCs into a 1,000 point game and it is pretty decent. 3x tervigons, 2 trygons, 1 gant squad, plus upgrades.... Anything higher than that and the nids are going to start needing stealers, hiveguard, etc... to be competative.
