Okay, so I am putting together a Salamanders army, and trying to put the finishing touches on my infantry. The decals for the shoulder pads, however, are giving me fits! No matter what I do, Microset, Microsol, water, razors, nothing seems to make that Chapter decal lie down. Does anyone have any advice? I've followed the normal tutorials, but the odd shape and weird length of the decal seem to make it not want to cooperate.

Has anyone used the etched brass symbols from Forgeworld? I saw these, but wasn't sure if you could bend one of the smaller ones around a shoulderpad. I swear, I am seconds away from just ordering Forgeworld shoulderpads for all my guys.

Not every shadow, but any shadow

I had similar dramas with the pauldron decals on mine too mate. Solved it by a gloss coat to start, then a tiny little cut on the top then a heap of microsol (you can also use lighter fluid i'm told). Then a gloss over coat, then a mat top coat. Seemed to work out fine.

I'm with you on the PE from forgeworld, I can't imagine being able to get them down.

The only other thing I thought of was to make a template and spray it.

I use the ones from the GW online store for my Ultramarines...

But, it seems, Salamanders are the only chapter who don't get them. O.o

I've never tried them, but I'd be worried about the brass "crimping" as you try to get it around the curves.

While there aren't "Salamander" specific old-metal shoulders, I feel like I've seen the "Alpha Legion" ones used effectively for them before...might be worth a look: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1110171

Those Alpha Legion shoulderpads are pretty kickin. They're fairly similar in price to the Forgeworld Salamander pads, but a little bit cheaper. I may go with those to mix it up. Thanks Ajo. (That's funny. There's a police dog around here named Ajo.)

Looking at the decals, I'd say maybe try changing up the angle a little may do it. If not, make sure you've trimmed really close to the symbol.

I had the same problem with the BA ones. What I did to fix it was cut out real close and put a nick in every spot I could, in this case between each of the Salamander's frills. That way if the decal's going to buckle it should mostly just fold one piece over the next and leave you with a pretty decently applied decal.

Get ahold of some decent Saly icons that should fit on a shoulderpad. Make a blue-stuff press mold and put those on your shoulders instead! Ends up looking better in the long run anyway...

Duke, your suggestion is undoubtedly the way to go in the future! Hungryp, I wound up doing exactly that and it totally worked. I had to put five or six slits in it and cut away almost all the excess clear film, but I wound up getting an application I can live with.

when I built a Salamanders army a few years ago I used the Alpha Legion shoulder pads.
