So I'm painting up some Salamanders Space Marines, and I thought it would be give them a little more character to have lava style bases, but at the same time, it would look a little strange on most gaming tables which tend to be either green or brown. Or should I go with a more typical style base, with dirt/grass/etc? Looking for some opinions on preferences

At the same time, lava bases would make it seem like the Salamanders are on their home planet, but Space Marines would usually be fighting on other planets, eh?

Best use of base is find the theme and its color to compliment your miniature's own color scheme.

Basically think of the base as part of the miniature itself, and not just something being mounted on.

Volcanic bases would be awesome.

I'd use them, but since i play Ultramarines, basic brown dirt suits them best, since it's macragge they fight on!

some glue, some sand painted black, would look great.

So what kind of bases would you think compliment Salamanders? (green space marines) Perhaps lava, since it's reddish, which contrasts well with green?

Well you could have it mostly charred rock with a tiny bit of lava making it more black. I agree with not worrying about it looking out of place to most gaming tables, if it bothers you just make a display board or a home table.

Forgecraft resin lava bases work great for Salamnders, both my Salamander and SoB armies are on them.

Salys, like all space marines, have fought everywhere you could imagine. If your going for a fluff-friendly idea I remember the salamanders fighting alongside my beloved blood angels in the last few wars for Armageddon. If I remember (dont quote me on this) I think they fought alot in the ash wastes and all along the more volcanic areas of that hell hole. Dragon Forge Design has a big selection of bases for "parched earth" that will work great when painted in a suitably burny and hot color palette.
