Hey, so I have been thinking about starting a small Chaos Space Marine force as a second army. I dont really know if that would be a wise move at this point though. Like I wouldnt want to spend money on an army just to find out 6th ed and the new codex wrote of half the units.

I was thinking of running a list a little like this:

Demon/Lord
Plague Marines in Rhino
Plague Marines
'Zerkers is Rhino

Would it be safe to say these units are a safe bet in the next codex? I know its not exactly the most competitive list but it would mostly be a side project till the new dex arrives. So, get a head start or wait it out?
Also, any general tips from Chaos players?

I wouldn't do it right now unless you find an amazing deal on the miniatures. There are significant rumors about CSM and the upcoming 6th with them possibly having a codex update and may be included in the starter box which would make some of the models quite affordable. Considering we should know more so soon, personally I am going to hold out and wait.

Honestly I am starting a themed Chaos army for Nurgle. The minis are cheap so far that I have found and really I like the look of the minis and that's why I am getting them/ If they are amazing then great! If not? Hell I play Tau and Nids already so they can't get much worse I say go for it and combat the "go with the flow" guys My Tau and Nids still tear up the occasional army and its awesome! Can't wait to do the same once I get my Nurgle!

In terms of efficiency in game I doubt your choices would be turned to crap in the next codex, however my advice would be to wait and see if and how you can still make a multi-god list with the next codex...

Well I ended up ordering the battleforce right after I posted this up. It seems like a good deal in its own right and I got 25% off. Might just buy a HQ now and leave it at that till the Dex drops.

Haha thats a good positive outlook! Nurgle is the direction I want to go for the most part, need to work on my green stuffing though. I think im going to hold off spending too much though. Just a small core army, then wait for the new Dex to flesh it out.

That is a worry I have. What if I cant use Plague Marines and Bezerkers in the same force? What if I cant use a Lash Prince with Zerkers? Thats why im a little cautious about going and buying everything.

Just wait till they come out with the new Chaos codex. Worst case scenario you have to wait a few months, best case scenario they come out with some sick new berzerkers/plague marines and you saved a bunch of $$

For what it's worth, the current 'chaos' codex isn't very interesting to play with or against so you'll be saving your sanity

Though if you do want to get a small core of the army together, go for it. No reason not to get some stuff in the meantime and have it painted so that your angus is peppered when the new codex comes out

I've always thought Nurgle would be a great army with room for a ton of good conversions. A lot of fun if you are into the hobby side of things.

I know CSM have a lot of metal models. Would the new Codex launch likely be accompanied with a lot of plastic versions of models?

And there will certainly be some if it's in the starter box.

I think I read somewhere that the GW distribution center in Atlanta had sightings of a plastic Chaos Dread...

Here are some really good Nurgle GS tutorials, I combined as many of the techniques as possible for some really good results!

Yeah I wanted to do Nurgle for a few reasons. One was the oppurtunity to try out abit of green stuffing, Which Im going to try on the marines from the battleforce. Plus there are quite a few elements of the fluff I like. Zombies, flys, disease, FnP?? Hell yeah. Though it was a hard choice between them and the World Eaters, hence the reason Im going with a squad of 'zerkers.

Think I'll just add one rhino and then a Lord or Demon Prince (????) to the battle force and leave it at that. That would keep me going till the new codex is out anyway without spending too much. Plus I'll have plenty of room to juggle about without buying models that would be obsolete.

I think there were rumours floating around about plastic Obliterators. A plastic Sorceror would be nice too.

Arguing with some people is like playing chess with a pigeon. You can play the best chess in the world, but at the end of the day the pigeon will still knock all the pieces off the board and then gak all over it.

The current Obliterator models are pants, they really need some new ones. Thats one of the reasons Im staying far away for now.

First off Daemon Princes second off save your self the money make a close combat army so Chaos marines with mark of Khorne. Oblits are amazing if you want to splerge on anything get them. In me exp. with chaos Nurgle lists are good on paper but fall short vs fast moving or even heavy shooting armies.

If you want to play chaos, absolutely do it right now.

If the upcoming codex update is anything like every other codex update for the past 5 years, what will happen is that the new codex will contain all the units of the old codex, except they'll add new ones. Meanwhile, the miniatures will greatly increase in price, or will slightly decrease in price for a big decrease in the number of models you get.

In other words, as has been mentioned, nothing you buy now will be unusable once the new codex comes out, and everything you bought will have been purchased before the army mysteriously becomes 25% more expensive.

Right before a new codex comes out is absolutely the time to start a new army.

Well if you don't mind stripping minis, buy used from friends or online. If you aren't in a huge hurry you can get some awesome deals from forums. I have gotten several hundred dollars worth of stuff for mebbe $160. I have a playable Tau force (through trades and like $80), A steadily growing Nids army (from trades/commission payments) and a slowly growing CSM Nurgle army (Typhus, some Plague Marines and a defiler for $40. And then 3 Dreads which are now converted that were traded).

Seriously wait. Don't get into them right now. I have a strong suspiscion they are going to change drastically between this codex and the supposed new one coming out. I'm a heavy CSM player and I am holding off doing anything else with mine until the new codex.

If that doesn't dissuade you - well you can never go wrong with cult troops

@cvtuttle - Your podcasts and listening to you talk about Chaos is what made me start investing in Chaos

@Thread - I guess my opinion is a bit slanted though seeing as I love painting and see them as a new challenge to paint or convert. So I buy them regardless of the new 'dex and possible changes.

Oh hodge podge a codex can't change that much with an edition. Just look at tyranids.
Sarcasim aside the chaos codex changed alot from third to fourth edition. Third was alot cooler. I would wait.
