Hey guys unfortunately got a rather noob question for you, I have recently expanded from playing Fantasy to also playing 40k and I am completely confused when reading the rulebook about when I can use grenades and how exactly they work. For the purpose of keeping it simple I am asking about Frag grenades and a basic example on the proper use in game.

Frag grenades have two uses:

1) They are assault grenades. If assaulting a unit in cover and your models are equipped with frag grenades, then they strike in normal initiative order and not at the reduced initiative. This is on a model-by-model basis.
2) They can be used against vehicles and have an armour penetration value of 4 + D6.

Correct. Just to add, for clarity; this can only be done in the Assault Phase following the specific rules for grenades against vehicles in the BRB. Not sure on the page off the top of my head.

Is this an exchange of attacks or is it in addition to other attacks that the units get?

Yeah, in 40k you don't actually throw grenades and use them to do damage (outside of using them against vehicles). It's not that intuitive starting out.

They are used instead of your normal attacks and you only get 1 attack per model using grenades (IE you ignore the attack characteristic).

Sorry Nungunz are you saying that a unit equipped with a frag grenade forgoes its attack if it uses them?

That doesn't sound right to me, they seem to be used as an Assault modifer to the attacks you make in CC.

If they're used for the 4+d6 attack against vehicles, the model only gets one attack.
If you're using them to not have the initiative penalty when assaulting into cover, you make your normal attacks at your normal init.

Yeh ok you are referring to the second part of the question. I thought you mean that answer for the first question when you said "outside of using them against vehicles."
