So, I was playing at my local GW on the weekend for Warhammer 40ks 25th, and, I was playing against a Tyranid player.
During the game, there was a large brawl going on in between one of his Termagaunt Squads and one of my Combat Squads. His Termagaunts where on a hill, and because of that, he claimed he could fire over the close combat, and into the squad behind. I thought this sounded wrong, but, gave him the benefit of the doubt to keep the game going. (though, I gave him a lot of stuff i shouldn't have, looking back on it.)
The rulebook wasn't clear on this, and I was wondering what you all thought.

If you can see it, you can shoot it.
If there is nothing physically blocking LOS to the target models (or they aren't in area terrain) then there is no cover save as well.

You can't shoot through a combat, even if you can see someone, though.
Atleast, that's how I've played it, and everyone who I've played with have played it.
I could see how shooting over it could work, but the way you are saying it means that someone could shoot through a combat.

So if I read correctly...
This is your hill with the Terma (T)

-------\

That was the rule last edition, but is not the case in the current game.
Shooting through a close combat is perfectly acceptable, so long as you can draw LOS.

tttt = Termagant unit. cc/\/\/\cc = close combat (slashing and backslashing, geddit?) SM = Space marine unit.
tttt....................cc/\/\/\cc...SM. Shot might be granted if target can be clearly seen (at least a head or limb sized bit). Cover save will apply if they CAN be shot at.
Elevated units.
tttt
----
..................................................cc/\/\/\cc....SM - shot granted, cover save for intervening units. Bases will be obscured by intervening combat.
tttt
----
-------
----------
......................cc/\/\/\cc.........................SM - shot granted, no cover. LOS can be traced to target bases with no intervening cover. Firer sufficiently elevated to see over intervening combat and clearly see target.

Seems like that to me too, you can shoot through your own units if they are not in CC so I'd reckon you can still do so if the are.
The cover save rule mentions friends and enemies as conferring the save so I'd say that allows you to fire through friendlies.
Of course shooting over the CC is no dramas at all.

Ok then. Glad there was one thing that he at least wasn't fooling about. Swearing is not allowed on Dakka Dakka. The word filter does not relieve your of your responsibility to follow the rules. Thanks ~Manchu
