I've played a total of 7 games now with my Marines and am not quite sure how Combat Squads rule works. Can I take a 10 man Tactical Squad and Drop Pod and put 5 in the Drop Pod (reserves) and have the other 5 be deployed separately?

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Unfortunately not.

You combat squad when deployed. So they go into reserves as one unit and when they come on from reserves you can combat squad them. This normally means the combat squads could come on in totally different places. To put them in reserve in a transport the entire unit has to be put into the transport. For other transports this means they are one unit for the rest of the game. Drop pods have an exception that allows you to combat squad when exiting the drop pod.

To clarify the above - being placed into reserves is INSTEAD OF deploying, meaning you have no permission to combat squad at this point.

Its almost like that exact question (relatively speaking) is in GW's FAQs...

Crap. I looked again and found it. For some reason, I was fixated on the Combat Squad questions in pink and glossed past it.
