So, I'm sitting down to begin work on basing my Salamanders, and I begin to wonder something: should I base them all the same?

Obviously I am going to do each unit all alike, but I thought it might be nifty to have different units each on different style bases. Do a grass base for one squad, an urban base for another, a snow base for another. I could also see this looking totally janky, though.

You guys think this would look good, or look like crap?

it won't look right

I do however color code shoulder pads and details by squad which really helps

Not crap, but a bit strange, given they're all fighting on the same battlefield

I'd prefer some other more subtle difference, e.g. a different colour shoulder pad edge or knee pad or even "belt buckle" (it doesn't really hold their trousers up, but you know what i mean)

Mixing to that degree would look odd, but I like the idea of maybe using 10 of the same style of base to differentiate between squads.

Maybe just differentiate between different aspects of a theme?
Lava theme: Bases with lava, bases with just ashen rocks, bases with part of a burned out tree.
Ice theme: Bases with snow, bases with a section of frozen lake, bases with Ice crystals.
And so on. It would allow you to different styles of bases, but keep a unified theme for the army. Some models on ice bases one unit over from lava bases wont mesh well.

QFT / +1 / however you want to say it. Different bases all centered around the same theme, or similar themes would look pretty cool. Even close but different themes (ie. Lava and industrial waste) would be nice. But something as different as Lava and Ice, or Desert and Jungle, would be Jarring if they're running near one another.

I will say it's an AWESOME way to diferentiate your squads though.

Usually, the base is what ties the army together as a theme.

Do the same bases but you can always rim the base in different colours

I think Archim3des has the right of it. I'm going to go with grassy swampy bases. Thanks for the advice guys.
