This may sound like an odd question - but i am trying to buy a bitz box - from kits!

This is why: my friends do not have the time or money to dedicate themselves to a warhammer army - so while i am slowly building my necron and WoC armies, i try to create a bitz box for a small wargame we are writing ourselves, where we use small thematical squads of independent characters from different homemade factions in a urban-40k-inspired setting - what a wall of text.

cut to the chase - i am trying to find the best way to gain access to about 30-40 miniatures, alot of bitz to make an unique "squad" in a 40k-like universe, primarily humans/undeads + whatever wild ideas we get, for the smallest price while supporting the local shop.

I have 2 chaos spawn, some space marines, some chaos marauder parts + some more for bits. but i am in dire need of more weapons and thematical parts.

many people say that orks and flaggelants are good places to start - but i also need some imperial guard i think, for they make great bases. I have around 120$, but i am great at kit bashing and creating smaller machines from bigger machines.

our current ideas for armies are:

undeads/vampires with soul powered mechanical giants as the heavy hitters and ghoul-like cannon fodder *

a elitist army of brutish mutants and scavenging veterans with a darwinistic-(brutal) philosphy

space-vikings led by valkyries

a martyr based army made up of zealots *

a space marine army made of "philantropic" but hippocratic mercenaries.

a race of sentient life destroying machines (think tyranids)

* = have priority

If you have any kind of ideas on how to build a bitz box with that in mind, i would greatly appreciate the help!

Well, uh.... I don't know exactly what you want to hear, besides buy a whole mess of kits and cut them up....

It's very possible that Fellow Dakkites would be willing to trade their bits for money or other models. I know I've done that on more than one occasion, and I've built some pretty unique stuff.

Wow, thanks for the fast reply

well - i am looking for cheap kits that are great for multiple purposes (especially the armies i am trying to descripe) or have great value per part - as in quantity!

My gamestore sells used miniatures for cheap, if yours don't do that you may have to go ebay. Mixed lots of miniatures should be really cheap

Not a very good idea, as they don't separate 40k from fantasy bits. Of course I've used the odd fantasy bits in conversions, but I only play 40K. I've bought two of these bags and the first one was pretty good. I got a lot of Ravenwing bits, parts of a Defiler and a Land Raider.
The second bag though was at least 50% fantasy specific, plastic horses and archers etc

edit - re-reading your post on what armies you want to build, maybe the 40k/fantasy mix will work for you but be aware before you buy

You might also wanna look into Necromunda which sounds exactly like what you are describing, each person can get a team of 5 to 8 dudes and your all set, i'll bet you can get them super cheap now as well since i don't think games workshop supports necromunda anymore, but you can still order from them....tho i would suggest ebay or somethign like that to get cheap squads

Warp Legions (Daemons) 2000pts

5 to 8 dudes? More like 8 - 15. Even more with some Outlander gangs.

However I too would recommend Necromunda. I'm working on my gang at the moment. The official minis are still available on the GW store and of course on eBay, or one can convert/kitbash. My last gang was a combination of human plastics, for example.

However if that's not your cup of tea then let's see. I'd probably pick up some Empire Free Company plastics for a start. Can't go wrong with them, at least in my opinion.
