Subject: Vanilla SM 1k list - I like expensive units

HQ Squad- 625 points -Chapter Master w/ Relic Blade, Storm Shield, and Melta Bomb -3 Honor Guard w/ Relic Blade (all) and Chapter Banner -(Un)Dedicated Transport: Land Raider Crusader w/ Extra Armor Unit 1- 215 points -Combat Squad 1-5 Tactical Marines w/ Heavy Bolter -Combat Squad 2-5 Tactical Marines w/Storm Bolter -Dedicated Transport: Drop Pod Unit 2- 161 points -6 Tactical Marines w/Storm Bolter -Dedicated Transport: Razorback w/ Extra Armor I am brand new to Space Marines, despite owning nearly 3500 points worth of them just a few months ago. I had to sell them all to pay for bills (I was also out of a job at that point). Now I have a job and an itch to get back into the swing of things, Space Marine style (and Necron style, but that'll have to wait until March or April or whenever). About this list: As you can tell, I slammed the majority of my points into that blob o' doom up there, what with the Relic Blades and the Crusader. I freaked out for a second until I realized you can take it as a HS option then embark your men into it and still move. The Drop Pod is coming in on turn 1 (it says half of the total drop pods, so if I only have one can I bring it in first turn?), then the unit inside disembarks and splits. The HB squad will stay near an objective I land near, while the other faffs about and shoots things. Unit 2 will then make a beeline for another objective, and most likely disembark so they can get in on the shooting as well. Would this work in a 1k game with any success? I'm expecting to be playing against both BA and SW, along with Necrons and a possible DE army.

I dunno, but if it was me I'd have way more troops. That list might work in annihilation, but if It were capture/control i'd just ignore your land raider and focus on your squads. No scoring units means you lose no matter what you kill...

I think you have too few units on the field. A couple placed blast templates could kill your army in 1-2 turns. Likewise, a group of something like Chaos Zerkers or Eldar Warlocks would put the hurt on. I would ditch the drop pod, go for Rhinos with everyone. I would drop the Honor Guard and attempt to go with melee Termies. Have the Rhinos follow the LR around and than the Termies + Chapter Master come out the front and assualt with Thunder Hammers or lighting claws or something.
Edit: Also you may want to remove the points from your post. You can keep the totals but not the individual points for each choice. It's not really looked upon too nicely. As well, you always want bigger squads for morale purposes (as you take leadership after losing 25% in one shooting phase, and you have a -1 modifier for being below 50% starting size).

Let me see what I can do:
1 Chapter Master - (Terminator Armor/2 Lighting Claws)
5 Terminator Assault Squad - (Thunder Hammers)
1 Land Raider
8 Tactical Squad - (Combi-Flamer)
1 Rhino
8 Tactical Squad - (Combi-Flamer)
1 Rhino
Total: 996
Just throwing something together, I would go with this. Automatically Appended Next Post: The other option for the list I posted would be to make one of them a Scout squad so you can fit 10 into a tactical squad. This would allow you to bring either a real Flamer, Melta or a Plasma. Combi weapons are nice but only being used once sucks. I just put combi-flamers on there for "all-around" ness. You would switch that for melta or plasma depending on the enemy.

I was considering a Scout squad, but I'm unsure how I would equip them. Should I leave them with their Bolters, or would Sniper Rifles be a good choice?

I'm surprised, for liking expensive units I don't see a single Legion of the Damned or Vanguard Vets. At 1k points the Command Squad is just to expensive, so is the LR and the Termies. ( imo) This is something I would consider at 1k pts for Vanilla. Psychic protection, nice amount of maneuverability mixed with nice fire power support. HQ Libby - 115pts +2 powers of your choice, Plasma Pistol ELITES Sternguard Vets (5) - 160pts +Rhino Sternguard Vets (5) - 160pts +Rhino Dreadnought - 135pts + TL Lascannon TROOPS Tactical Squad (10) - 215pts +Meltagun, Missile Launcher, Razorback Tactical Squad (10) - 215pts +Meltagun, Missile Launcher, Razorback * Combat Squad Meltagun with the Razor, leave the Missile Launcher back to provide cover fire/hold objectives. You could even drop the Dread and swap on more powerful turrets of the Razorbacks if you like, but at 1k points I don't think you'll be seeing alot of AV14 coming to the field, but if you do, that's what the Dread is for and the meltaguns on the Tactical squads. Anyways, hope this is helpful and welcome back to the hobby, sorry you had to sell your old army.

Thanks Fexor!
You sure like your melta, don't you? Also, what should I equip the Sternguard with? I'm more likely to take a few squads of Tac/Scouts than I am those guys, but in the event I do, what should I do with them equipment-wise?

Take a normal list which has assault termies, command squad and captain, replace with honour guard, sternguard and chapter master. This would be how to get the honour guard in: use as assault termies.
Legion of the damned would be fun, especially with tigerius. you can have some second turn arrival fun.
Else legion and vulkan can be fun.

That list looks a lot better, although I would make sure to keep atleast 2 of the razorbacks moving together so that you have 12 marines in a pack as if you leave 6 marines alone they won't has a lot of firepower, although having 4 squads allows you to camp on objectives fairly well.
I would ditch the drop pod on the dreadnought and deploy him as with a lascannon and missle launcher loadout, there is no need to be deep striking really. I mean you can drop behind an enemy and possible get rear armor however that will leave you vulnerable. Instead deploy him behind a wall as he can walk 6" and still fire both weapons. I think you can put those points into something better.

I could do a TL Assault Cannon on a Razorback, or I could do Extra Armor on both Razors plus an additional Combi-weapon for the sternguard.

McNinja:
To answer your question regarding the Sternguard, their power lies in their "Special Ammunition" rules with their Bolters. They really don't need to be kitted out with anything, they're superb with their special ammo. If you get a minute, crack the SM codex and read their entry and what each special ammo can do for you. As you select which type of ammo you want to shoot each turn.

You couldn't have a pack of twelve marines in the razorbacks, as Combat Squads must be split 5/5.
Well, if you have the Captain + 5 Basic Marines, + 6 Sternguard, I guess you could...
This is what I run at 1000pts:
HQ:
Librarian – Force Weapon, Bolt Pistol, Power Armour - 100pts
Troops:
Scouts - 9x Sniper Rifle, Missile Launcher - 150pts
Tactical 1 - 250pts
Combat Squad 1: 3x Bolter, 1x Melta Gun, Sergeant (BP/CCW), Razorback with TL Lascannon
Combat Squad 2: 4x Bolter, 1x Missile Launcher
Tactical 2 - 250pts
Combat Squad 3: 3x Bolter, 1x Melta Gun, Sergeant (BP/CCW), Razorback with TL Ass. Cannon
Combat Squad 4: 4x Bolter, 1x Missile Launcher
Heavy:
Vindicator - Siege Shield - 125pts
Vindicator - Siege Shield - 125pts
Total: 1000pts

Combat squads of 5 can't have Missle launchers. I put out scouts if 1000 points are called for
5 squads of scouts each with snipers and Missle launchers. And they can have Missle launchers with only 5 in squad. Then 3 squads of devestators with Missle launchers.
That's 35 models, 5 holding units, 17 Missle launches, and 125 points to spend on hq. Sometimes ill swap out devs for attack bike squad or two, depending on tanks of my enemy.

Uh, A combat squad is a half squad of 10 Tactical. You buy the tactical squad, and split it into two combat squads. Of course, they can fight together, if you decide that, as well.
Really, your troops selection is T4/4+ save guardsmen, with devastators (arguably the weakest choice for a standard SM list in the heavy support spot), and a librarian. >.>

This is definitely better than your first list. If I were to nitpick I would say that you don't gain a whole lot from running units 2 and 3 separately. It's basically just a scoring hull that's costing you around 100pts considering you could just have two squads in two rhinos. If you slapped some lascannons or something on them it might be worth it but at 1000 you need to sell your points dearly.

Thi is much better list than 1st one, unit 2 and 3 are fine, made from unit 4 same unit as 2,3. Save 59pts, your dread is equiped with weapons with long fire range, so dont put him into Drop Pod, made him Rifle dread(2x TLAC) for 125pts, you save another 55pts. Drop combi-meltas from Sgts and take 2nd rifle dread or Predator with Ac- LCs sponsons. You will have some good long range support for your squads.

So more like this? I want something that is fully capable of putting down AV13, even in a 1000 point game (Necrons and their Quantum Shielding). I know Autocannons can, but I like reliability (and Lascannons). The AA on the Captain is there because I had nowhere else to spend the points.

An easy way to get more lascannons would be to drop the sternguard for TLLCs on your razors. Let the captain ride with a tacsquad, drop the 6th marine from every squad and get combiweapons or something.
Dropping hellfire and artificier plus the extra marines gives you 75pts. The sternguard and their razorback is 165 and they're not gonna do much that your regular squads can't.
You could drop the captain for a librarian, drop the sternguard razorback and flesh the unit out to 10 strong. 10 sternguard with gate of infinity is a neat trick.

I still curious how effective Sternguard and their special ammunition are. I like the Kraken bolts, since they're 30" and AP4, but I don't know how much better that would be than a standard marine. honestly, I'm not really feeling any Elites, other than Dreads, simply because they don't appeal to me.
